While it is<br>\nnewsworthy that such licenses have been issued, a more<br>\nprofessional news release would contain background information<br>\nsufficient to answer the most common of questions prompted by the<br>\nnews release itself. A few questions which follow naturally from<br>\na scan of the article are:<\/p>\n<p>* What are the names of the companies that have received<br>\nlicenses?<\/p>\n<p>* What are the details of the selection process used to select<br>\nthe companies?<\/p>\n<p>* Is the selection process fair, equal and transparent?<\/p>\n<p>* What fees apply to the obtaining of a license to import iodized<br>\nsalt?<\/p>\n<p>* What rights, benefits and obligations does the license holder<br>\naccrue with the license?<\/p>\n<p>With the current per kilogram market price of salt at Rp 800<br>\n(10 U.S. cents), as stated in the article, the projected market<br>\nvalue for the 805,000 metric tons of salt expected to be imported<br>\nby seven of the nine licensed companies amounts to $80.5 million.<br>\nSurely such value deserves more than a simple announcement that<br>\nlicenses have been issued.<\/p>\n<p>I hope the Post will do a follow-up article which will include<br>\nanswers to the questions noted above. A better alternative would<br>\nbe for the Ministry of Industry and Trade to formulate an<br>\nadequate response and make it available for publication in<br>\nEnglish and Indonesian-language publications.<\/p>\n<p>A side note: A domestic demand estimate of 609,000 tons<br>\ntranslates into nearly 3 kg consumption for each and every<br>\nIndonesian citizen (current population estimate: 209 million).<br>\nSuch a high per capita consumption rate is at best not healthy,<br>\nand also may not be realistic. A shortage of salt for domestic<br>\nuse will benefit Indonesians in general, as such a shortage will<br>\nact to improve health statistics, due to the lowering of people's<br>\nblood pressure and high blood pressure-related deaths.<\/p>\n<p>C.
