A group claiming to represent the Indonesian Online Motorbike Taxi\nAssociation held a demonstration at the Saiful Mujani Research &\nConsulting (SMRC) office in the Menteng area of Jakarta on Tuesday\n(14\/4).<\/p>\n
Observations by CNNIndonesia.com showed that the protesting crowd,\nnumbering around dozens of people, began arriving at the location at\n12:00 WIB, led by a command vehicle.<\/p>\n
They uniformly wore online motorbike taxi driver attire, accompanied\nby flags from their respective communities.<\/p>\n
The protesters reportedly came not only from Jakarta but also from\nvarious regions, such as Karawang and Bekasi.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe demand that Saiful Mujani retract his statement regarding calls\nfor the Indonesian people to overthrow the leadership of our Republic\u2019s\nPresident, Mr Prabowo Subianto,\u201d said the General Chairman of the\nIndonesian Online Motorbike Taxi Association, Cecep Syarifudin, in his\nspeech.<\/p>\n
Cecep condemned Mujani\u2019s statement, deeming it an act of treason. He\naccused Mujani of seeking chaos and horizontal conflict within\nsociety.<\/p>\n
He stated that Mujani\u2019s statement was highly dangerous.<\/p>\n
\u201cAn apology from Saiful Mujani to the Indonesian people through TV\nand online media,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Cecep also urged the police to investigate the case, as it was seen\nto border on treasonous actions.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf our demands are not realised within 3 x 24 hours, we will return\nwith a larger crowd,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Recently, a video clip of Mujani narrating calls to topple the\ngovernment has gone viral on social media. His statement has also\nresulted in police reports for alleged incitement.<\/p>\n
Saiful Mujani himself is a Professor of Political Science at UIN\nSyarif Hidayatullah and the founder of the research and political policy\nconsultancy firm based on research, Saiful Mujani Research and\nConsulting (SMRC).<\/p>\n
In the video clip, Mujani appears to be speaking at an event with a\n\u2018Halal bi Halal\u2019 backdrop. However, it is not yet known exactly when and\nat what event Mujani spoke.<\/p>\n
\u201cYes, only we can do it, the people; \u201998 wouldn\u2019t have happened if\nthe people and friends didn\u2019t come down, the MPR wouldn\u2019t have brought\ndown Suharto, it wouldn\u2019t have,\u201d said Mujani in the circulating video\nclip.<\/p>\n
Former Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security\nAffairs Mahfud MD assessed that the statement cannot be categorised as\ntreason.<\/p>\n
Mahfud explained that in the new Criminal Code (KUHP), treason is\nregulated in a single article, namely Article 193.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe term treason is actually regulated in just one article, Article\n193, with two paragraphs; the first one refers to treason with the\nintent to overthrow a government that is not in accordance with the\nConstitution. So, it means intending to overthrow,\u201d said Mahfud, quoted\nfrom an upload on his personal YouTube account, Thursday (9\/4).<\/p>\n
Saiful Mujani has also stated that his call for consolidation to\ntopple President Prabowo Subianto is not a form of treason but part of a\npolitical stance.<\/p>\n
He stated that a political stance is one level below political\nparticipation or action. Political participation, he said, is the core\nof democracy.
