Ong hopes for stroger cooperation<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AFP): Singapore and Australia should work together
\nto explore burgeoning business opportunities in Asian markets
\nsuch as Indonesia, Singapore President Ong Teng Cheong said
\nTuesday.<\/p>\n
\"We should combine our strengths to seize and develop these
\nopportunities,\" Ong said at a banquet for visiting Australian
\nGovernor General Bill Hayden, who arrived here Monday on a three-
\nday visit.<\/p>\n
Ong cited an existing \"trilateral relationship\" linking
\nSingapore, the Australian state of Victoria and the Chinese
\nprovince of Jiangsu as an example of such cooperation.<\/p>\n
\"Indonesia, with its vast infrastructural needs, rich cultural
\nheritage and large natural resources, is another potential
\npartner for trilateral cooperation,\" the Singapore president
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Ong, who graduated in architecture from the Australian
\nUniversity of Adelaide, also offered to help Australia integrate
\nwith Asia, noting a common vision of a dynamic Asia-Pacific.<\/p>\n
Many Australians gave their lives during the Second World War
\nin defense of Singapore and what was then known as Malaya, and
\nfought in Vietnam in the 1960s and 1970s to stop the march of
\ncommunism, he said.<\/p>\n
\"Today, Australia is once again active in Asia -- not to fight
\na war on someone else's behalf, but on your own convictions that
\nyour future is locked with Asia's,\" Ong said.<\/p>\n
Hayden held talks Tuesday with Prime Minister Goh Chok Tong
\nand Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew.<\/p>\n
Singapore is Australia's largest trade partner in Southeast
\nAsia with annual two-way trade totaling about US$4 billion.<\/p>",
