One-stop slowdown<\/p>\n
The tantalizing promise held out to the undocumented foreign
\nworkers from Indonesia was that if they accepted the amnesty and
\nreturned to their homeland voluntarily before the Feb. 28
\ndeadline, they would not only be allowed to come back to work in
\nthis country legally but also that this would be done speedily.<\/p>\n
But the unfortunate reality is that this fast-track has not
\nmaterialized. In its place are procedures which seem to be
\nadministered at a snail's pace. As a result, out of the hundreds
\nof thousands of illegal Indonesian workers who have been
\nrepatriated, a mere 500 have made it back to Malaysia.<\/p>\n
Malaysian employers desperately want them back and the
\nIndonesians want to return. Yet thousands are still waiting
\nanxiously for permission in the holding camps. This drawn-out
\nprocess in getting Indonesian labor has badly hit the
\nconstruction industry and plantations in particular.<\/p>\n
Whatever the reasons may be, it is clear that this
\nadministrative snarl should not be allowed to continue because of
\nits detrimental effects on all the affected parties. The
\nchallenge for both the Malaysian and Indonesian Governments is to
\nquickly bring this farce to an end and devise effective measures
\nto ensure that the recruitment of workers is done without
\nconsuming too much time or money.
