One shot, five arrested in Senen market complex unrest<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Central Jakarta Police shot one man and detained
\nfive others for looting at the Atrium Senen shopping center
\nduring unrest in the busy Senen market complex on Thursday
\nevening, an officer said.<\/p>\n
The incident, sparked by a heated argument between a street
\ntrader selling pornographic VCDs and a customer, also left two
\nmotorcycles burned.<\/p>\n
Asst. Supt. Iza Fadri, deputy chief of the Central Jakarta
\nPolice precinct, said crowds gathered and when rough elements
\nbegan looting, his men shot a man during the unrest.<\/p>\n
\"This man has been taken to a hospital but I don't know which
\nhospital,\" Iza told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
The other five men, the officer added, were arrested and
\nseveral wristwatches in their possession which they had just
\nlooted from a store at Atrium Senen were confiscated as evidence.<\/p>\n
\"We also seized a hammer which was believed to have been used
\nto shatter the glass cases in the store,\" Iza said.<\/p>\n
Until late in the evening, no hospitals in the area, including
\nCipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital, could confirm admission of
\nthe wounded man.<\/p>\n
\"We received no injured person from the Senen unrest,\" a
\nstaffer at Cipto said.<\/p>\n
At the scene, locals recalled that the incident began at
\naround 5:30 p.m. after the unidentified VCD customer went back to
\nthe VCD seller to give the latter a lesson.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said that the VCD trader with the help of fellow
\ntraders about 50 meters behind Atrium Senen beat the customer,
\nwho had reprimanded the seller over the price he offered.<\/p>\n
\"Upset, the trader shouted 'thief, thief' and the customer was
\nthen beaten by the other sellers,\" Udin, a witness, said.<\/p>\n
The man left but came back with a group of his friends who
\ntook revenge, damaging the kiosks, witnesses said.<\/p>\n
A few minutes later, the crowd grew bigger and tires and
\nwooden planks were set ablaze on Jl. Gunung Sahari.<\/p>\n
The elements of the mob then threw stones at the windows of
\nAtrium Senen, forced their way in and began to steal the
\nmerchandise.<\/p>\n
The incident lasted for more than an hour until police fired
\ntear gas canisters into the crowd.<\/p>\n
The unrest led locals to prohibit any vehicles from passing
\nthe street near the disturbance, causing heavy traffic congestion
\nin nearby Pasar Baru area.<\/p>\n
By 8 p.m., the traffic and the situation in the area had
\nreturned to normal.<\/p>\n
Five police trucks were seen parked around Atrium Senen until
