One person dead in renewed violence in troubled Maluku<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku (JP): Renewed shooting and bomb attacks by armed
\nraiders broke out in Uraur village, Kairatu district, Central
\nMaluku on Saturday, claiming one life and injuring another, an
\nofficial said on Sunday.<\/p>\n
Spokesman for the civil emergency post John Tomasowa said 32
\nhouses, one church and an elementary school building were razed
\nby fire during the attacks.<\/p>\n
He said the attackers had been mobilizing people in a nearby
\nforest for two days before the assault.<\/p>\n
Witnesses said they saw no security personnel at the scene of
\nthe attacks.<\/p>\n
Separately, Pattimura Military Commander Brig. Gen. I Made
\nYasa said on Sunday that the military had anticipated possible
\nattacks on Oma village in Haruku island following a series of
\nthreats by a certain group who wished to retaliate for an attack
\nallegedly perpetrated by Oma people on a speedboat carrying
\nSirisori Salam residents on Nov. 18.<\/p>\n
Two bodies have been recovered from the speedboat, while the
\nremaining 14 passengers have been declared missing.<\/p>\n
\"We anticipated an attack on Oma village. But the attackers
\nraided Uraur village, instead,\" Yasa said.<\/p>\n
The head of an investigative team, comprising representatives
\nof the civil emergency post, the police, the military and the
\nNational Commission on Human Rights assigned to probe the case of
\nthe missing speedboat, Maj. Marthin Luther Djari, said Oma
\nresidents had denied the allegations.<\/p>\n
Tomasowa also said that armed rioters had also thrown bombs at
\nthe edge of Wayame village in Teluk Ambon Baguala district, in
\nAmbon on Saturday evening, forcing dozens of residents to seek
\nrefuge.<\/p>\n
Rampant attacks over the past two weeks in the waters of Teluk
\nAmbon Baguala have forced the local military to ask for two
\ncompanies of marine reinforcements from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
The soldiers will be dispatched to secure Ambon bay where five
\nfloating security posts will be set up to maintain security in
\nspeedboat docking areas and three other posts will be erected to
\nsecure the waters between Ambon and Haruku islands.<\/p>\n
Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina had recently ordered local
\nNavy officers to register all speedboat operators and ascertain
\ntheir routes so as to enable maritime security to control and
\nprevent possible attacks using speedboats. (49\/lup)<\/p>",
