        "content": "<p>One killed and 11 missing in ferry sinking off Bintan<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): One child died and eleven other passengers are<br>\nmissing after a ferry sank off Bintan Island, in Riau province,<br>\nSaturday afternoon, an official at Telaga Punggur port on Batam<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>Ramli Samad was quoted by Antara as saying yesterday that the<br>\nMV Sentosa 10 was carrying 92 passengers, according to the liner<br>\nmanifest, and was en route from Telaga Punggur to Tanjung Pinang<br>\non Bintan when it sank.<\/p>\n<p>Rescuers saved 91 people plus the five crew members and the<br>\nship&apos;s captain Supoyo. However eleven people were reported<br>\nmissing by relatives following the accident.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Some people came here and claimed that their family members<br>\nwere also on the ship,&quot; Ramli said.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry&apos;s capacity was 150 people; it was operated by P.T.<br>\nLiba Marindo.<\/p>\n<p>When the accident took place, Minister of Transportation<br>\nHaryanto Dhanutirto was in Batam meeting with directors of state-<br>\nowned companies under his ministry, Antara reported.<\/p>\n<p>The child who died was three-year-old Andi, according to<br>\nTanjung Pinang navy base officer Eri Sulistiono. An officer at<br>\nTelaga Punggur port said the child died of exhaustion.<\/p>\n<p>Miswadi, an officer with the Tanjung Pinang Search and Rescue<br>\nsquad, said yesterday that rescue workers were still searching<br>\nfor other victims. The team stopped searching at 5 p.m. yesterday<br>\ndue to poor weather and heavy seas.<\/p>\n<p>The ferry has not yet been found. Miswadi said it might have<br>\nafter it sank in the nine-meter deep water.<\/p>\n<p>The survivors of the accident were taken to hospitals in<br>\nTanjung Pinang and Batam. Supoyo and his crew members, however,<br>\ndisappeared, according to Ramli, making it difficult for the<br>\nauthorities to obtain information about why the accident<br>\noccurred.<\/p>\n<p>The news agency reported that some passengers said that about<br>\n15 minutes after the ferry left Batam, the crew ordered the<br>\npassengers to move to the stern. The ferry&apos;s bows then rose out<br>\nof the water as the vessel slowly sank.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the passengers jumped into the sea, while others<br>\nscrambled for life buoys.
