One inmate killed, three injured in prison brawl<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Justice and Human Rights Minister Yusril Ihza
\nMahendra paid an impromptu visit to Cipinang penitentiary, East
\nJakarta, at about 9 p.m. on Tuesday night, several hours after it
\nwas the scene of a fresh brawl between two rival groups.<\/p>\n
Yusril, however, refused to speak to the press.<\/p>\n
One inmate was killed and three others were injured in the
\nbrawl. The fatality was identified as 40-year-old Timbul
\nTampubolon who died of severe wounds caused by a sharp weapon.
\nThree other inmates, who were injured, were rushed to Kramatjati
\nPolice Hospital.<\/p>\n
East Jakarta Police detective chief Comr. Putu Jayen confirmed
\nthe incident and said that police still could not figure out the
\nreasons behind the brawl but suspected that the fighting was
\ncaused by ethnic divisions.<\/p>\n
\"This is fighting between groups inside the prison such as
\nArek (inmates coming from East Java), Ambon (from Maluku), Korea
\n(from North Sumatra) and Manado (from North Sulawesi).<\/p>\n
\"We are still looking into what triggered the riot. At the
\nmoment we are concentrating on calming the prisoners and taking
\ncontrol,\" Putu told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Around 300 police personnel were deployed to secure the
\nsituation inside and outside the penitentiary, Putu said.<\/p>\n
\"We are backed up by personnel from Jakarta Police and nearby
\npolice subprecincts,\" he added.<\/p>\n
Nearby residents heard a series of warning shots fired by
\npolice to disperse the brawling inmates.<\/p>\n
Scuffles between inmates have sparked riots and caused
\nfatalities on frequent occasions at Cipinang Penitentiary --
\nJakarta's largest prison -- despite regular weapon searches by
\npolice and prison wardens.<\/p>\n
The latest incident happened last month, leaving six inmates
\ninjured. The brawl was reported to have involved two rival groups
\nfrom North Sumatra and East Java.<\/p>\n
In August, three inmates were injured in a brawl between the
\ntwo rival groups, two days after police conducted an intensive
\ncell-to-cell search for weapons and dangerous objects inside the
\nstate penitentiary.<\/p>\n
The brawls, which involve sharp weapons, have proved that
\nweapon searches by police and wardens have not actually been
\neffective as inmates still have access to weapons. (emf)<\/p>",
