One dies, three injured in student brawls<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A high school student was beaten to death by
\nother students in a brawl in front of Cipinang Penitentiary, in
\nEast Jakarta, police said yesterday.<\/p>\n
City Police Spokesman Lt. Col. E. Aritonang confirmed Wawan
\nRiyanto, 17, a student of Al Falah private technical senior high
\nschool, died Wednesday night in Persahabatan Hospital in
\nRawamangun, East Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Yesterday his family took his body home to Boyolali, Central
\nJava, for burial.<\/p>\n
"The victim had severe head injuries," Aritonang said.<\/p>\n
The postmortem at the Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
\nshowed he died from being beaten with blunt objects, he said.<\/p>\n
Wawan and nine friends were taking a public bus home when
\nstudents started throwing stones at their bus, he said.<\/p>\n
The 10 students on the bus called to the driver to stop, and
\nthey got off to chase their assailants.<\/p>\n
Aritonang said Wawan and his friends got back on the bus when
\nthey saw the other students running toward them with sticks and
\nswords.<\/p>\n
But Wawan fell out of the bus and was mobbed and beaten, he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
"The attackers fled leaving the Wawan unconscious," Aritonang
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Local residents rushed him to Persahabatan hospital, but he
\ndied during treatment.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta<\/p>\n
On Tuesday night two students from another private technical
\nsenior high school, and a security guard, were seriously wounded
\nin a brawl in South Jakarta. But they were all released from
\nhospital yesterday.<\/p>\n
The students were seriously wounded with knives and swords in
\na brawl between the students of three schools near a bus shelter
\non Jl. Belitung.<\/p>\n
A police officer at the South Jakarta Police precinct said
\nNurul Huda, 18, an aviation high school student was slashed in
\nthe face, head, hands and legs. Nurlam, 17, a student of Dwikora
\ntechnical senior high school was slashed across the face.<\/p>\n
A security guard working at a nearby building, Agus Muslim,
\nwas slashed in the face when he tried to break up the fight, the
\nofficer said.<\/p>\n
He said the brawl started when dozens of students from PGRI a
\nprivate senior high school on Jl. Budi Utomo, Central Jakarta
\nthrew stones at students on their way home by public bus,
\nsmashing the bus windows.<\/p>\n
The students on the bus then chased their attackers.<\/p>\n
In the subsequent brawl two PGRI students pulled out swords
\nand stabbed Nurul and Nurlam, the officer who asked not to be
\nnamed said.<\/p>\n
The PGRI students fled when the students fell.<\/p>\n
Police did not catch the students. They found only a rusty
\nsword and its sheath on the ground.<\/p>\n
Police rushed the injured to Cipto Mangunkusumo General
\nHospital, he said. At least 15 students were killed in separate
\nbrawls here last year. Several suspects are still at large. (jun)<\/p>",
