One dead, three still missing in Ambon riot<\/p>\n
AMBON, Maluku (JP): A man was found dead with multiple stab
\nwounds, while three others were still missing on Thursday
\nfollowing the latest sectarian conflict involving Christians and
\nMuslims in Waihaong subdistrict here.<\/p>\n
The discovery of Daniel Pati Kaihatu's body on the seashore of
\nWaihaong brings the death toll resulting from the communal
\nclashes on Wednesday to three.<\/p>\n
Local residents identified the missing as Rido Tesireroi, Nico
\nBernard and Pius Sarkol.<\/p>\n
The clashes erupted just hours following Vice President
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri's departure from Maluku after her two-day
\nvisit aimed at promoting peace here.<\/p>\n
Maluku Governor Saleh Latuconsina urged security forces to
\nsearch for the missing men.<\/p>\n
\"I have also called on the authorities to provide accurate
\ninformation on the number of victims since uncertainty could
\nprovoke people,\" Saleh said.<\/p>\n
He confirmed that three people have died but claimed to be
\nuninformed about people who were being held hostage.<\/p>\n
The governor acknowledged that the latest outbreak of violence
\nwas confusing, due to the fact that a peace accord between
\nMuslims in Waihaong and Christians in Batu Mati subdistricts had
\npreviously been agreed upon.<\/p>\n
The clash broke a period of peace following 15 months of
\nbloodshed which claimed at least 2,000 people on the Maluku
\nislands.<\/p>\n
\"It shows that some people here still don't want peace,\" Saleh
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The armed clash was a big blow to efforts to restore peace by
\nyouths from several warring neighborhoods of Kuda Mati, Batu
\nMerah and Galunggung Waihaong.<\/p>\n
The violence began when a mob suddenly attacked a parade of
\npedicab drivers and youths who were supporting the peace talks in
\nWaihaong.<\/p>\n
Berti Diaz and Rido Nikijuluw were killed in the clash, while
\nseveral others were injured in the unrest. (49\/jun)<\/p>",
