One dead in clash<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): One person died and two others were
\ncritically injured when a mob clashed with police on Friday
\nevening in the town of Manokwari, about 450 kilometers west of
\nthe Irian Jaya provincial capital of Jayapura.<\/p>\n
According to witnesses, the incident started after a group of
\nlocals got into a tussle with several police officers near the
\nharbor just after the passenger ship Dobonsolo docked.<\/p>\n
The incident escalated and sparked a mass rampage in which
\nseveral houses and public buildings were attacked.<\/p>\n
It is highly suspected that the three victims were shot by
\npolice trying to control the melee.<\/p>\n
Hospital sources in Manokwari confirmed that John Wamafma, 30,
\na farmer, died of bullet wounds. Two others -- Abraham Mambraku,
\n30, and Markus Kambu, 18 -- are being treated in intensive care.<\/p>\n
Manokwari military police chief Lt. Asmil Umar pledged that if
\nthere was evidence that the deaths were caused by \"improper
\npolice procedure\" those responsible would be held accountable.<\/p>\n
However, he underlined that there must be solid evidence,
\nincluding witnesses, if the allegations are to be followed up.<\/p>\n
Several community leaders on Saturday expressed their disgust
\nto the Jayapura governor and called for the dismissal of
\nManokwari district police chief Lt. Col. RE Hutabarat.<\/p>\n
