        "content": "<p>One dead in clash<\/p>\n<p>JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya (JP): One person died and two others were<br>\ncritically injured when a mob clashed with police on Friday<br>\nevening in the town of Manokwari, about 450 kilometers west of<br>\nthe Irian Jaya provincial capital of Jayapura.<\/p>\n<p>According to witnesses, the incident started after a group of<br>\nlocals got into a tussle with several police officers near the<br>\nharbor just after the passenger ship Dobonsolo docked.<\/p>\n<p>The incident escalated and sparked a mass rampage in which<br>\nseveral houses and public buildings were attacked.<\/p>\n<p>It is highly suspected that the three victims were shot by<br>\npolice trying to control the melee.<\/p>\n<p>Hospital sources in Manokwari confirmed that John Wamafma, 30,<br>\na farmer, died of bullet wounds. Two others -- Abraham Mambraku,<br>\n30, and Markus Kambu, 18 -- are being treated in intensive care.<\/p>\n<p>Manokwari military police chief Lt. Asmil Umar pledged that if<br>\nthere was evidence that the deaths were caused by \"improper<br>\npolice procedure\" those responsible would be held accountable.<\/p>\n<p>However, he underlined that there must be solid evidence,<br>\nincluding witnesses, if the allegations are to be followed up.<\/p>\n<p>Several community leaders on Saturday expressed their disgust<br>\nto the Jayapura governor and called for the dismissal of<br>\nManokwari district police chief Lt. Col. RE Hutabarat.<\/p>\n<p>\"The people's aspirations deserve to be heard,\" Governor<br>\nFreddy Numberi said. (34)<\/p>",
