One dead, four injured after rebel attack<\/p>\n

Bangke, a construction worker, was shot dead in an attack on
\nTuesday by unidentified persons in the Ugimba subdistrict in
\nPaniai regency, some 1,000 kilometers west of Jayapura.<\/p>\n
Four other people were badly injured in the attack, allegedly
\nperpetrated by the members of Papua rebel movement (OPM), said
\nBrig. Gen. Tommy Jacobus, the deputy chief of Papua provincial
\npolice.<\/p>\n
The attack began early Tuesday morning, when eight
\nconstruction workers were asleep in a school building unit that
\nwas being constructed by them in the Ugimba subdistrict.<\/p>\n
The workers were guarded by two police personnel from nearby
\nEnarotali police subprecinct, who slept with the workers in the
\nschool building unit. They were Chief. Brig. Wardoyo and Chief.
\nBrig. Hendrik Balalembang.<\/p>\n
Surprisingly, at 5 a.m local time, some 10 unidentified people
\nsuddenly attacked them, and the two police personnel quickly
\nfought back the attackers.<\/p>\n
A fierce gun fight developed in the area, and lasted for five
\nminutes. The gunfight claimed a sizable toll from the side of
\npolice personnel and the workers, as they were apparently not
\nwell-prepared for the attack.<\/p>\n
Bangke, who hailed from the South Sulawesi town of Tana
\nToraja, was shot in the head and he died on the spot. Four others
\nwere badly injured, namely police officer Hendrik Balalembang and
\nworkers Panggalo, Kondo and Sulaeman.<\/p>\n
\"The fate of other construction workers are still uncertain as
\nthey went missing after the incident,\" said Jacobus.<\/p>\n
The four were Yohannes, Sonda, Nuwung and Rangga.<\/p>\n
The attackers fled the scene after the incident, which then
\nallowed police officer Wardoyo to bring the dead and injured
\ncompanions to nearby Nabire hospital for treatment, with the help
\nof local residents.<\/p>\n
Shells of used bullets were found at the scene, and from it
\ncan be concluded that the alleged Papua rebels used FN pistols
\nand M-16 rifles in the attack.<\/p>\n
Jacobus said that a robbery was likely the main motive behind
\nthe attack. \"They took some food belonging to the construction
\nworkers during the attack. It seemed that they ran out of food
\nwhile they were in the jungle, and they tried to get it from the
\nworkers down there,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Jacobus suspected that the Papua rebels were members of a
\nrebel group led by Titus Murib and Thadius Yogi, who operated in
\nthe Paniai regency.<\/p>",
