One conjoined twin dies after surgery<\/p>\n

Ten-month-old Perani Nuraida is now alone in the children's
\nintensive care unit (ICU) at Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital
\nin Central Jakarta since her conjoined sister, Perina Nurfarida,
\ndied on Wednesday morning after eight hours surgery to separate
\nthe two.<\/p>\n
"Perina died at 8:35 a.m. mostly due to post-surgery stress.
\nPerani's condition is still unstable and we have to wait for
\nthree days to see how she will progress," Darlan Darwis, who is
\nhead of RSCM's pediatric emergency unit, told reporters.<\/p>\n
A team consisting of over 60 experts and 40 nurses took 16
\nhours to separate the girls on Tuesday, much longer than the
\ncalculated 10 hours of surgery. The surgery was completed at
\naround 12 p.m.<\/p>\n
Although the hospital has had experience operating on 16 pairs
\nof Siamese twins, the first being in 1970, Darlan admitted that
\nPerina and Perani's was a tough case.<\/p>\n
"It was difficult to identify which organs belonged to whom
\nduring the surgery," Darlan added.<\/p>\n
The Siamese twins were first born to mother Nunik, 24, and
\nfather Dian Nurfalah, 27, of Serang, Banten province, last April.<\/p>\n
The girls were of the omphalopagus type as they shared one
\nabdomen, one intestine and rectum, and had a conjoined liver,
\nwhile their hearts were on the right side of their united body.<\/p>\n
The major surgery on Tuesday was the second. The first one,
\nwhich was held when the pair were one month old, was to construct
\na rectum to avoid possible infection.<\/p>\n
Part of the hospital costs which amounted up to Rp 100 million
\n(US$11,235) were covered by the Nur Farida foundation who donated
\nRp 3 million each month to the parents, since breadwinner Dian is
\nonly a factory worker.<\/p>\n
After ten months of keeping watch over their daughters at the
\nICU waiting room, Nunik and Dian left the hospital on Wednesday
\nmorning to bury Perina in their hometown in the Levin area of
\nSerang, leaving Perani, who still has no idea of what had
\nhappened to her sister.<\/p>",
