On Sipadan and Ligitan<\/p>\n
The bad news has finally arrived, and concerned Indonesian
\ncitizens must accept the fact. This is the second time that
\nIndonesia must "give up" her territory after the secession of
\nEast Timor four years ago.<\/p>\n
We cannot evaluate why Indonesia must give up the two islands,
\nbecause we do not have adequate information regarding the
\nislands' status. Some people say that the government of Indonesia
\ntends to ignore small islands that border neighboring
\nterritories. This could be true, so as a starting point, let us
\nbe more vigilant and not ignore islands that lie on our nation's
\nborders, including our land boundaries with East Timor, Malaysia
\nand Papua New Guinea.<\/p>\n
Being an Indonesian citizen from West Timor, may I call upon
\nthe government to take a close look at the detailed covenant on
\nthe boundary between the eastern and western parts of Timor as
\nestablished by the former colonial governments of the Netherlands
\nand Portugal? The covenant was placed on the State Gazette, Year
\n1909, No. 214. Almost one hundred years has passed, and who knows
\nthat unilateral trespasses had taken place.<\/p>\n
Most likely, part of our territory spanning a number of
\nregencies sharing their borders with the Republic of Timor Leste
\nhad been unilaterally inhabited by the citizens of East Timor.<\/p>\n
