On reading habits<\/p>\n
I read with interest Ms. Refina Harahap's letter (Jan. 24,
\n1997) about poor reading habits. In 1995 a small foundation
\ncalled Yayasan Kinatouan opened six village libraries and last
\nyear we opened another six in Minahasa, North Sulawesi.
\nHopefully, by 2000, thirty villages in Minahasa will have their
\nown libraries in the effort to combat intellectual poverty.<\/p>\n
We bought about 900 titles and old magazines to be distributed
\nin the first year. But in the second year we had difficulty
\nselecting new titles because not many new titles were published.<\/p>\n
We have realized that Indonesians like reading very much.
\nChildren particularly love reading. Before school hours they come
\nto the library and read. They come back during the school break,
\nand after the school has closed they do not go home immediately
\nbut read again in the library.<\/p>\n
We are wondering how we can add to our collection of books to
\nmatch the reading habits of the children. Maybe the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture would like to help us expand our library
\nservices in other districts. People like reading if they are
\ngiven access to books in the library.<\/p>\n
