The meeting will take place at<br>\nthe Sahid Jaya hotel in Jakarta and many members of the community<br>\n-- either people with a direct interest in the subject to be<br>\ndiscussed or those without such an interest but with a deep<br>\nconcern regarding forest conservation matters -- are expected to<br>\nbe present.<\/p>\n<p>The involvement of two prominent personalities in the meeting<br>\n-- Minister of Forestry Djamaloedin Soeryohadikoesoemo, who will<br>\nopen the meeting, and former environmental minister Emil Salim,<br>\nwho will preside over the debate -- is an indication that this<br>\nwill be a serious event. The debate, according to Emil, is<br>\ndesigned to find a consensus among the parties concerned<br>\nregarding the matter of forest management and utilization.<\/p>\n<p>Any open debate such as this deserves welcome provided that it<br>\ntruly involves community participation and absorbs the views that<br>\nactually prevail in society. As an idea, this debate may be<br>\nviewed as an effort to lift the discussion of forestry affairs<br>\nout of the confinements of specialized groups, such as forestry<br>\nbusinesses, the forestry ministry and forestry experts.<\/p>\n<p>Considering its impact on the community, the management of our<br>\nforests is too great an issue to be left to the discretion of<br>\nlogging concessionaires.
