On intellectuals<\/p>\n
The Chairman of ICMI (Association of Indonesian Moslem
\nIntellectuals), B.J. Habibie denies the accusations that the
\norganization which is based on religion is leading to
\nsectarianism. He says that PIKI (Association of Indonesian
\nChristian Intelligentsia), ISKA (Association of Catholic
\nScholars) and ICMI were established to welcome the second stage
\nof the National Awakening. In this era we need quality workers
\nwho are not only well-versed in science and technology but also
\nhave faith and devotion to religion and Indonesian culture.<\/p>\n
It is said that intellectual organizations are designed to
\nkeep away from politics because the people's aspirations can
\nalready be channeled through the three existing political
\nparties--Golkar, PPP and PDI.<\/p>\n
We certainly do not want the intellectual associations to get
\ninvolved in politics. Politics should serve as a tool not an end.
\nIntellectuals should not forget their social commitment to
\nenhance the living standards of the majority of the population
\nand bring about social changes, progress and justice.<\/p>\n
