On Indonesia's recovery<\/p>\n

Considering that up until the first days of 2001 Indonesia has
\ncontinued to be disorganized in terms of the economy, politics,
\nlaw enforcement, observation of human rights, national security
\n(in particular the recent Christmas night bomb blast at\/near
\nseveral churches and other recent bombings) as well as personal
\nsecurity. I am afraid I will remain pessimistic that my country,
\nIndonesia, will be able to recover this year despite the optimism
\nof our President, the Coordinating Minister for Economy Rizal
\nRamly and others.<\/p>\n
One of my reasons for being pessimistic is the fact that
\nPresident Gus Dur has very often made controversial statements
\nwhich in turn have resulted in negative impacts to the nation's
\npolitical and economic stability, including his recent statement
\nsaying that the police had managed to arrest Tommy Soeharto,
\nwhich was later denied by the national police chief. Meanwhile,
\nfrom my observation I can tell that partisan infighting amongst
\nmembers of the political elite will continue for the sake of
\ntheir groups rather than the national interest.<\/p>\n
To start improving the country's condition, I think, we should
\ncontinue criticizing our president with the hope that he will
\nchange his attitude and depressing habit of issuing controversial
\nstatements as well as taking action \"as he wishes\" (which among
\nothers has caused Minister Ryaas Rasyid to resign from the
\ncabinet).<\/p>\n
