Uncensored news reporting and the emergence of many<br>\nnew publications are an indication of an adequate freedom of the<br>\npress during his tenure.<\/p>\n<p>It needs to be remarked, however, that freedom of the press<br>\nand freedom of expression in the Habibie era are still soiled by<br>\nintimidating behavior by the government apparatus, particularly<br>\nthe police.<\/p>\n<p>For example, the reporting on the Free Aceh Movement by SCTV<br>\n(or ANteve?). Faisal Basri, secretary-general of the National<br>\nMandate Party (PAN), was interrogated by the police for<br>\nexpressing his opinion in a news publication. It must also be<br>\nremembered that a VCD by Butet Kertaradjasa is still banned.<\/p>\n<p>The three examples above show that freedom of the press and<br>\nfreedom of expression are still not entirely a reality. This<br>\nrequires the attention of the next government. Freedom of the<br>\npress and freedom of expression are needed for the progress of<br>\nthe nation.
