Denmark has, for the first time in recent history, deployed\nconscripted personnel to Greenland amidst rising geopolitical tensions\nin the Arctic region. The personnel are part of the first group from Denmark\u2019s expanded\nconscription programme. The programme is designed to train soldiers\ncapable of operating in Greenland, a strategic region with highly\nchallenging geographical and climatic conditions.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis demonstrates our presence here, showing that we are not only\nthinking about our own safety, but also about the people in Greenland,\u201d\nsaid David, a 19-year-old conscript, to Reuters, as quoted on Wednesday\n(2\/9\/2026).<\/p>\n
Trump has previously repeatedly mentioned the acquisition of\nGreenland as being in the US national security interest, while also\naccusing Denmark of not being serious enough about defending the Arctic.\nHowever, both the Danish and Greenlandic governments have firmly\nrejected the idea.<\/p>\n
Copenhagen is now promising billions of dollars to strengthen\ndefences in the Arctic, after the Danish Minister of Defence admitted\nthat the region has suffered from a lack of military investment for too\nlong.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, we are part of a broader picture regarding strategic\ncommunication concerning Greenland,\u201d said Company Commander Captain\nLaura Jepsen. \u201cHowever, our role here is merely to continue training for\nconscripts and soldiers, and to gain more experience through exercises\nin the Arctic terrain and climate.\u201d<\/p>\n
The personnel are participating in the Arctic Endurance exercise,\nwhich prepares soldiers for combat and survival in extreme temperatures.\nThe exercise is part of Arctic Sentry, a NATO mission launched this year\nto increase the alliance\u2019s presence in the Arctic amidst internal NATO\ntensions caused by Trump\u2019s statements regarding Greenland.<\/p>\n
While training north of the Arctic Circle, Danish personnel must\nnavigate through vast stretches of barren rock and treeless open\nlandscapes.<\/p>\n
