Oldest legislator thanks surgeons<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The oldest House of Representatives legislator,
\nAbdul Madjid, disclosed the reason why he was prepared to take
\nthe provisional speakership.<\/p>\n
His daughter Ratna Riantiarno, a noted stage actress, told The
\nJakarta Post on Tuesday that her 82-year-old father called for
\nabrupt eye surgery to cure the cataracts in his right eye prior
\nto his Assembly appointment.<\/p>\n
The aggravating eye problem reduced his vision so much that he
\ncould not even see or read a few months ago, Ratna said.<\/p>\n
\"Only two days before the session began, he went to the
\nJakarta Eye Hospital and pushed his doctors to operate,\" Ratna
\nsaid, adding that it was already late when the doctor suggested
\nhim to wait until the next morning.<\/p>\n
However, the spirited Indonesian Democratic Party of
\nStruggle's Madjid stepped up pressure on the doctors, who finally
\ngave up, recalled Ratna.<\/p>\n
\"I was not there when surgery was done, because I believed no
\ndoctor would meet his demands. But my younger brother called me
\nearly the next morning and told me that my father's sight had
\namazingly recovered,\" said Ratna, wife of stage director and
\nchief editor of Matra weekly magazine Nano Riantiarno.<\/p>\n
Madjid always keeps eye drops in his pocket now. His eye needs
\ndrops every two hours.<\/p>\n
A long-standing custom at the House obliges the oldest and
\nyoungest members to preside over preliminary sessions before the
\nspeaker is elected.<\/p>\n
Madjid successfully presided over the session before Akbar
