Oil training for Timorese<\/p>\n
CANBERRA (AP): Australian Industry Minister Nick Minchin
\nannounced Wednesday a plan to help train East Timorese people for
\njobs in the former Indonesian province's fledgling oil and gas
\nindustry.<\/p>\n
The announcement came shortly before Australia and East
\nTimorese negotiators begin talks on redrafting a treaty dividing
\nup profits from the rich Timor Gap oil and gas fields under the
\nsea between northern Australia and East Timor.<\/p>\n
A joint body set up by Australia, East Timor and the United
\nNations body steering the province to full statehood has set
\naside US$700,000 a year for the scheme from royalties paid by oil
\ncompanies operating in the area.<\/p>\n
\"This is something constructive we can do to help improve the
\nlong term economic outlook for the people of East Timor,\" Minchin
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Mari Alkatiri, an East Timorese leader who is minister for
\neconomic affairs in the United Nations Transitional Authority in
\nEast Timor, welcomed the decision.<\/p>",
