Oil spill contaminates farmland in Cilacap<\/p>\n

At least 3,000 square meters of swampy area and farmland in
\nKarangbawang, Cilacap Regency, have been seriously contaminated
\nby diesel oil leaking from a large pipe belonging to the state
\noil company Pertamina's distribution unit in Cilacap, Central
\nJava.<\/p>\n
The oil leak that was discovered last Saturday has killed all
\nthe crops and flora on the farmland, as well as thousands of
\nfish.<\/p>\n
Local farmers said they were holding negotiations with
\nPertamina's local office on financial compensation for their
\nplants and paddy fields damaged by the oil.<\/p>\n
They said they detected the oil leak last Saturday but
\nPertamina's technicians only arrived on Monday.<\/p>\n
\"Pertamina has acted too late and so far, no action has been
\ntaken to repair the pipe,\" said Ratno, who found the oil leakage
\nwhen he was fishing in the area on Saturday.<\/p>\n
As of Wednesday afternoon, the Pertamina technicians had yet
\nto repair the leak because the pipe was buried 1.5 meters
\nunderground.<\/p>\n
I Gusti Bagus Wisnu, spokesman for Pertamina's distribution
\nunit, said the leaking pipe was part of the distribution line to
\nPadalarang and Bandung, West Java.<\/p>\n
\"But the leak does not affect the distribution of diesel oil
\nto Padalarang because Pertamina still has another pipe for the
\nsame purpose,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He said the technicians needed a week to repair the leaking
\npipe because they had to block it first from water inundation
\nbefore soldering the leakages.<\/p>\n
He added that Pertamina was taking measures to minimize the
\ndamage to the environment.<\/p>",
