Oil rig explosion injures seven<\/p>\n
SAMARINDA, East Kalimantan: A fire occurred at an oil rig
\nbelonging to PT Expan in Tarakan on Monday, seriously injuring
\nseven workers.<\/p>\n
The seven are being treated at Tarakan General Hospital.<\/p>\n
Adj. Sr. Comr. Herman Ismail, chief of the Tarakan Police,
\nsaid the fire was accompanied by a major explosion that could be
\nheard within a two-kilometer radius.<\/p>\n
He said the explosion occurred when workers were drilling for
\noil at an abandoned well used during the Dutch colonial era.<\/p>\n
According to a preliminary assessment, the explosion was
\ncaused by natural gas accompanied by fire erupting from the old
\nwell.<\/p>\n
Ismail said that despite being far from residential areas, the
\nfire location remained dangerous because it was still spewing
\nflames that could eventually reach houses in the subdistrict.<\/p>\n
The fire location, located 1,000 kilometers north of the
\nprovincial capital of Samarinda, is adjacent to a military
