OIC pledges Rp 12t aid for Aceh<\/p>\n

The Organization of Islamic Countries (OIC) has pledged Rp 12
\ntrillion (US$1.22 billion) in reconstruction funds for tsunami-
\ndevastated Aceh.<\/p>\n
\"OIC has expressed interest in channeling assistance for
\nrehabilitation and reconstruction projects in Aceh. It will
\namount to Rp 12 trillion,\" Aceh acting governor Azwar Abubakar
\nsaid on Wednesday.<\/p>\n
Earlier, the world's biggest grouping of Islamic nations
\npromised $145 million for Aceh, to be spent largely on children
\norphaned by the Dec. 26 disaster.<\/p>\n
No less than 170,000 people were killed or are still missing
\nas a result of the catastrophe in December last year, which also
\nhit the neighboring island of Nias.<\/p>\n
\"The funds for orphans will cover their daily needs and
\neducation requirements for 15 years,\" Azwar said, as quoted by
\nAntara.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, also an OIC member country, has the largest Muslim
\npopulation in the world.<\/p>\n
Besides from OIC, funds have also come from various others
\nquarters worldwide, including Australia, the European Union, and
\nmany other non-governmental organizations (NGO).<\/p>",
