        "content": "<p>OIC pledges $145m for Aceh orphans<br>\nreport<\/p>\n<p>Agencies, Kuala Lumpur<\/p>\n<p>The world's biggest grouping of Islamic nations has pledged<br>\nUS$145 million for Indonesia's tsunami-ravaged Aceh province, to<br>\nbe spent largely on children orphaned by the Dec. 26 disaster, a<br>\nreport said on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>The money will finance various projects over a four to five<br>\nyear period, chair of the Organization of Islamic Conference<br>\n(OIC), Malaysian Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, was quoted<br>\nas saying by the New Straits Times.<\/p>\n<p>The OIC, along with the Islamic Development Bank (IDB), has<br>\nalready identified five projects to fund, including a home for<br>\norphans in Aceh. Work to build the shelter will start in three<br>\nmonth's time, Badawi said.<\/p>\n<p>\"The OIC and IDB have made the necessary contacts in<br>\nIndonesia. What is important now is to identify where, and how<br>\nbig the shelter should be,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah was speaking in Saudi Arabia after a meeting with a<br>\ndelegation from the IDB and the OIC. He is in Saudi Arabia for a<br>\nthree-day visit which ends on Sunday.<\/p>\n<p>In January, the OIC set up an alliance to rescue tsunami<br>\norphans in Aceh from foreign influences following reports that<br>\nmissionary groups would place them in Christian children's homes.<\/p>\n<p>More than 230,000 people are believed to have died in Aceh<br>\nwhen a magnitude-9.0 earthquake unleashed a tsunami that<br>\ndevastated the coastline in December.<\/p>\n<p>Abdullah said Indonesia had agreed to allow the private sector<br>\nto handle some of the projects under the OIC banner, Malaysia's<br>\nnational news agency Bernama reported.<\/p>\n<p>Last month, Malaysian Foreign Minister Syed Hamid Albar said<br>\nOIC members had made separate contributions to help tsunami<br>\nvictims in countries hit by the disaster, and that the IDB had<br>\npledged US$500 million in soft loans for reconstruction efforts<br>\nin Aceh and other places.<\/p>",
