Oh, the humanity<\/p>\n
From Warta Kota<\/p>\n
In its Oct. 5 edition, Warta Kota again reported the death of
\na resident in Kronjo, Tangerang district, as a result of street
\njustice. This unfortunate resident, who actually was trying to
\nborrow a bicycle pump, was called a thief and then mobbed to
\ndeath.<\/p>\n
Similar tragedies have occurred too many times. A person, who
\nmay not be a criminal at all, can too easily be called a thief
\nand then lose his life at the hands of a mob bent on street
\njustice. Quite obviously, there is not a morsel of humanity left
\nin such cases.<\/p>\n
Do we really intend to foster a civilization marked by animal
\nignorance? Didn't this nation, when wresting its independence
\nfrom its colonial rulers and declaring its independence, place
\nhumanity in a respectable position? Isn't togetherness and
\ntolerance the foundation on which our nationhood is established?
\nDidn't we lose too many lives in our struggle for independence?<\/p>\n
Allow me now to ask our political elite -- both in the
\ngovernment and in the legislative bodies -- the following
\nquestion: Are you sufficiently concerned by the prevailing
\ntendencies which has given Jakarta a notorious reputation as a
\ncity of savages?<\/p>\n
