Officials to discuss WTO<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Senior officials from the United Nations
\nEconomic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP)
\nwill gather here tomorrow for a three-day meeting to discuss
\npreparations for the upcoming World Trade Organization (WTO)
\nmeeting in Singapore.<\/p>\n
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced yesterday that the
\nJakarta meeting, which will prepare materials for the WTO's first
\nministerial meeting in December, will focus on issues brought up
\nby ministers from the WTO's member countries.<\/p>\n
According to the ministry's statement, the Jakarta meeting is
\nbeing organized by the Indonesian government in cooperation with
\nESCAP, the United Nations for Development Program and the United
\nNations Conference on Trade and Development.<\/p>\n
Indonesia expressed its hope that the WTO could play an
\nimportant role in reducing unilateral actions. The WTO requires
\nmember countries to adjust their regulations to its principles
\nand mechanism for solving trade conflicts through multilateral
\narrangements.<\/p>\n
\"We expect that the WTO will become an effective international
\norganization in managing and supervising world trade
