        "content": "<p>Officials query police commitment in backup<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): City officials blamed the police and military on<br>\nTuesday for providing inadequate numbers of personnel to back up<br>\nan operation against public order violators on the capital's<br>\nstreets.<\/p>\n<p>The head of the City Public Order Office's public places<br>\ndivision, Tony Boediono, said security officers did not even show<br>\nup to help his men who were about to carry out the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\"Our officials were ready to hit the streets but the promised<br>\nreinforcements from the police and military didn't show up,\" he<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>\"The absence of backup police and military personnel made it<br>\ndifficult for us to take stern action (against violators).\"<\/p>\n<p>Similar concern was also aired by Central Jakarta Mayor Andi<br>\nSubur Abdullah.<\/p>\n<p>\"I asked for 30 police officers but only 10 showed up,\" he<br>\nsaid in frustration.<\/p>\n<p>\"The police should trust that I will provide all necessities<br>\nfor their officers during the operation,\" he said, acknowledging<br>\nthe failure to reach an agreement to finance the operation during<br>\na recent city leadership-level meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\"I have my own contingency budget to feed them while waiting<br>\nfor the disbursement of the budget,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Acting Jakarta Police spokesman Asst. Supt. Alex Mandalika<br>\ncould not be reached for comment on the officers' apparent<br>\nunwillingness to support the city administration's efforts to<br>\nrestore public order to the capital.<\/p>\n<p>But city officials vowed they would continue carrying out<br>\ntheir operation, even with the absence of police personnel.<\/p>\n<p>\"We'll keep going with the public order operation,\" Tony said.<\/p>\n<p>\"We'll divide the officials into two teams. The first team<br>\nwill have its members roam the streets, while the other team will<br>\nbe stationed at several places, such as markets and bus<br>\nterminals,\" he added.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Subur, an Army colonel, said his mayoralty would move a<br>\nlarge number of vendors from the streets near Pasar Senen market<br>\nto a temporary location.<\/p>\n<p>\"The important thing is that they don't disturb traffic while<br>\nwaiting for a permanent place on the second floor of the new bus<br>\nterminal,\" he said, adding that construction of the terminal<br>\nwould be completed in the next six months.
