Officials may be implicated in forgery case: Police<\/p>\n

The Jakarta Police said on Saturday an investigation into a
\ndocument forgery case involving taxi company PT Primer Metro
\nTransindo could implicate city officials.<\/p>\n
The case revolves around the alleged forging of a signature on
\ndocuments needed by the company to secure an operation permit.<\/p>\n
\"During a preliminary investigation by civil investigators
\nwith the City Legal Bureau, an official with the City
\nTransportation Agency confessed to his role. But, of course, we
\nwill not be satisfied with the (preliminary) investigation, but
\nwill pursue the possibility that other officials are involved,\"
\ncity police spokesman Sr. Comr. Tjiptono told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Tjiptono said the official who confessed to a role in the
\nmatter was attached to the land transportation business
\nmanagement division of the agency.<\/p>\n
\"However, we have yet to name any suspects in the forgery
\ncase,\" he said, adding that police investigators would begin
\nquestioning officials from the City Transportation Agency and the
\nCity General Affairs Bureau on Monday.<\/p>\n
The case was brought to the media's attention by Deputy
\nGovernor Fauzi Bowo, who said his signature had been forged on a
\ndocument notifying relevant city agencies of his approval of an
\noperation permit for PT Primer.<\/p>\n
However, the document had already been processed and PT Primer
\ncurrently holds an operation permit for its 50 taxis.<\/p>\n
City Audit Agency head Firman Hutajulu confirmed that some
\nofficials could be implicated in the matter.<\/p>\n
\"What is strange to me is that the proposal for a business
\noperation permit by the company was rejected during a
\ncoordination meeting among city agencies,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Relevant city agencies are the City Transportation Agency,
\nCity Economic Development Bureau and the City General Affairs
\nBureau.<\/p>\n
Firman said at least four officials were suspected of having
\nknowledge of the crime. Two of the officials are still active,
\none has retired and the other has passed away.<\/p>\n
The head of the transportation agency, Rustam Effendy
\nSidabutar, defended the people in his agency.<\/p>\n
\"My subordinates were not in a position to verify the
\nauthenticity of the document. Their job was simply to follow up
\nand process the received document,\" Rustam said.<\/p>\n
This is the third similar case to emerge in the past two
\nyears.<\/p>\n
Last year, the police discovered that the signature of the
\nCity Secretary had been forged on documents. One suspect is in
\ncustody while the investigation continues.<\/p>",
