Officials doubt new Marcos wealth<\/p>\n
MANILA (AP): Philippine officials expressed doubt on Thursday
\nover claims by a former chief prosecutor of new evidence of
\nbillions of dollars in secret Swiss bank accounts allegedly
\nbelonging to the family of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos.<\/p>\n
Swiss bank officials and investigators denied the existence of
\nsuch accounts.<\/p>\n
On Wednesday former solicitor general Francisco Chavez claimed
\nhe had evidence an account in the Union Bank of Switzerland in
\nthe name of I. Araneta contained US$13.4 billion and belonged to
\nMarcos' youngest daughter, Irene Marcos-Araneta.<\/p>\n
He said he also had proof Marcos' widow, Imelda, had a
\nseparate Swiss bank account containing 800,000 ounces of gold.<\/p>\n
He accused Swiss authorities, Swiss banks and the Philippine
\ngovernment's Swiss lawyer of covering up the existence of the
\nalleged accounts.<\/p>",
