        "content": "<p>Official poll body checks registration<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The official Election Supervision Committee, led<br>\nby its chief, Attorney General Singgih, yesterday conducted<br>\nmonitoring of the voter registration procedures.<\/p>\n<p>The team watched registration activities in some districts of<br>\nSouth and West Jakarta as well as in Tangerang, some 30<br>\nkilometers west of Jakarta. The national registration drive began<br>\non Wednesday and will last until May 20.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the team were Lt. Gen. Syarwan Hamid and Commodore<br>\nPranowo of the Armed Forces, as well as representatives of the<br>\nthree political organizations competing in the 1997 general<br>\nelections.<\/p>\n<p>They included Abdul Gafur of the ruling Golkar faction, Tosari<br>\nWidjaja of the United Development Party (PPP), and Ismunandar of<br>\nthe Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI).<\/p>\n<p>At almost the same time, a number of independent poll<br>\nwatchdogs also began their supervision of the registration<br>\nprocedure.<\/p>\n<p>Effendi Saman and Desmond J. Mahesa of the National Committee<br>\nfor the Supervision of General Elections in Bandung, and Santoso<br>\nof the Independent Election Monitoring Committee in Jakarta said<br>\ntheir organizations had sent activists across the country forms<br>\nto note down violations, their perpetrators and people who report<br>\nviolations to them.<\/p>\n<p>\"We'll then conduct investigations,\" Effendi said.<\/p>\n<p>Back in Jakarta, Chief of the Setiabudi sub-district Sujadi<br>\nH.M. Ali in South Jakarta told Singgih and his team that in only<br>\ntwo days, the registration officers had registered 6,406 people<br>\nor half of those eligible to vote in his area.<\/p>\n<p>Registration officers began knocking on doors to register all<br>\nIndonesians 17 years of age or older, and teenagers who are<br>\nalready married, as voters in the 1997 general election, which is<br>\nscheduled for June next year.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Indonesian electoral system voters will choose their<br>\nrepresentatives for local government and the national<br>\nlegislature.
