Official poll body checks registration<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The official Election Supervision Committee, led
\nby its chief, Attorney General Singgih, yesterday conducted
\nmonitoring of the voter registration procedures.<\/p>\n
The team watched registration activities in some districts of
\nSouth and West Jakarta as well as in Tangerang, some 30
\nkilometers west of Jakarta. The national registration drive began
\non Wednesday and will last until May 20.<\/p>\n
Included in the team were Lt. Gen. Syarwan Hamid and Commodore
\nPranowo of the Armed Forces, as well as representatives of the
\nthree political organizations competing in the 1997 general
\nelections.<\/p>\n
They included Abdul Gafur of the ruling Golkar faction, Tosari
\nWidjaja of the United Development Party (PPP), and Ismunandar of
\nthe Indonesian Democratic Party (PDI).<\/p>\n
At almost the same time, a number of independent poll
\nwatchdogs also began their supervision of the registration
\nprocedure.<\/p>\n
Effendi Saman and Desmond J. Mahesa of the National Committee
\nfor the Supervision of General Elections in Bandung, and Santoso
\nof the Independent Election Monitoring Committee in Jakarta said
\ntheir organizations had sent activists across the country forms
\nto note down violations, their perpetrators and people who report
\nviolations to them.<\/p>\n
\"We'll then conduct investigations,\" Effendi said.<\/p>\n
Back in Jakarta, Chief of the Setiabudi sub-district Sujadi
\nH.M. Ali in South Jakarta told Singgih and his team that in only
\ntwo days, the registration officers had registered 6,406 people
\nor half of those eligible to vote in his area.<\/p>\n
Registration officers began knocking on doors to register all
\nIndonesians 17 years of age or older, and teenagers who are
\nalready married, as voters in the 1997 general election, which is
\nscheduled for June next year.<\/p>\n
Under the Indonesian electoral system voters will choose their
\nrepresentatives for local government and the national
