        "content": "<p>Officers to be posted at street junctions<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): City police pledged on Thursday to intensify<br>\nsecurity by posting more plainclothes police officers at busy<br>\nstreet junctions and residential complexes in a bid to stem the<br>\nrising tide of crime in the capital.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will not hesitate to take stern action against criminals<br>\nto protect the public. Criminals are getting fiercer, so if<br>\nnecessary we&apos;ll shoot them to death,&quot; the city&apos;s chief detective,<br>\nCol. Gories Mere said here on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;We will attempt to respond and to protect the public. We are<br>\nall aware that there has been an increase in the incidence of<br>\narmed robberies on public transport vehicles and in residential<br>\ncomplexes and streets,&quot; Gories told a media conference.<\/p>\n<p>City police spokesman Lt. Col. Edward Aritonang and senior<br>\npolice officer Lt. Col. Dikdik Muliana also attended the media<br>\nconference.<\/p>\n<p>City police chief Maj. Gen. Noegroho Djajoesman shared Gories&apos;<br>\nview, saying that rising crime had left Jakartans feeling<br>\ninsecure. He expressed a worry that the nervous state of the<br>\ncapital&apos;s inhabitants might soon begin to impinge on daily<br>\neconomic life.<\/p>\n<p>The two-star general made the remarks after a routine meeting<br>\nwith the head of the Army&apos;s Strategic Reserves Command Lt. Gen.<br>\nDjamari Chaniago, the chief of the Army&apos;s Special Force Maj. Gen.<br>\nSyahrir and the chief of the Jakarta Military Command Maj. Gen.<br>\nDjadja Suparman at the city police headquarters.<\/p>\n<p>Gories said that four alleged criminals, including the<br>\nsuspected leader of a gang thought to be responsible for a number<br>\nof robberies in the city, were shot dead in a series of raids<br>\nlaunched by police in separate areas of Jakarta on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>However, Gories said that a policeman also received knife<br>\nwounds to his chest and head after getting into a fight with one<br>\nof the suspects during the operation.<\/p>\n<p>He said the alleged leader of a gang of robbers shot during<br>\none raid had been identified as Nimbar bin Umar, 40. He was shot<br>\nin North Jakarta early on Thursday morning.<\/p>\n<p>Police suspect his gang have committed at least 20 armed<br>\nrobberies over a period stretching from early last year until<br>\nAugust of this year.<\/p>\n<p>The gang is also suspected of stealing Rp 40 million<br>\n(US$4,000) from a school in Tebet, South Jakarta, in July.<\/p>\n<p>Nimbar was arrested in Kramat Tunggak red-light district on<br>\nthe strength of a tip-off from his former accomplice Sumbri, who<br>\nhas been incarcerated in East Jakarta&apos;s Cipinang penitentiary<br>\nsince July.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Once captured, police ordered Nimbar to lead them to the<br>\nhideouts of his other accomplices in East Jakarta. In the Duren<br>\nSawit area, he pointed out a house. Three policemen got out off<br>\nthe car, leaving one colleague to guard Nimbar,&quot; Gories said.<\/p>\n<p>Nimbar launched himself at the officer in a desperate attempt<br>\nto escape, but was shot five times. He died instantly, Gories<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>A separate squad of police officers were forced to shoot an<br>\narmed robber who resisted arrest on Jembatan Lima in West<br>\nJakarta.<\/p>\n<p>The suspect, identified as Ibrahim, 21, was shot in the head<br>\nand leg. A second man escaped.<\/p>\n<p>Ibrahim was spotted by plainclothes officers at a nearby<br>\njunction after he attempted to steal a wristwatch from a man<br>\nidentified as Usman.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The victim shouted for help and alerted our undercover<br>\nofficers,&quot; Gories said.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that the suspect was shot in the head after<br>\nignoring warning shots.<\/p>\n<p>Two men were also shot dead by South Jakarta police on<br>\nThursday, while six more were arrested during an operation to<br>\ncrack down on crime in the South of the city.
