        "content": "<p>Officer gets light sentence for student's murder<\/p>\n<p>Nani Farida, The Jakarta Post, Banda Aceh, Aceh<\/p>\n<p>Banda Aceh District Court on Saturday sentenced Second Brig.<br>\nAspardi bin Rusdi to five years in prison for shooting a student<br>\nto death last year.<\/p>\n<p>The sentence was lighter than the seven-year sentence<br>\nrequested by the prosecutors for the defendant, who they charged<br>\nwith the murder of Syiah Kuala University student Muhammad Iqbal.<\/p>\n<p>Aspardi shot Iqbal in the head from close range following a<br>\nminor traffic incident between them on the street of Banda Aceh<br>\nin July 2002. The police, who was off-duty, asked Iqbal to stop<br>\nbut the student ignored the call and Aspardi gave chase on his<br>\nown motorcycle and shot him.<\/p>\n<p>Witnesses said the policeman was enraged as the student<br>\nsideswiped his motorbike, causing a scratch.<\/p>\n<p>In their verdict, the panel of judges said Aspardi was<br>\nconvicted of violating article 338 of the Criminal Code, which<br>\ncarries a maximum sentence of 15 years in jail.<\/p>\n<p>Presiding judge Syafaruddin said Aspardi was handed a lighter<br>\nsentence as witnesses told the court that the officer had<br>\nfulfilled the standard procedures of firing warning shots three<br>\ntimes before aiming at Iqbal.<\/p>\n<p>The verdict sparked anger from Iqbal's family, who said that<br>\nthe defendant deserved the maximum sentence.<\/p>\n<p>Aspardi, a father of two children, apologized for the<br>\nincident, which he claimed as an accident. \"I am so sorry, I did<br>\nnot do it on purpose,\" he told the court.<\/p>\n<p>Through his lawyer Zuhri Hasibuan, Aspardi appealed the<br>\nverdict on the grounds that he had followed the standard<br>\nprocedures and it was his negligence that caused Iqbal to die.<\/p>\n<p>Zuhri said his client was aiming at Iqbal's foot but he missed<br>\nthe target as he opened fire on a motorcycle.<\/p>\n<p>Iqbal's uncle, Sabki, said some witnesses saw Iqbal stopped<br>\nhis motorcycle after hearing the warning shots, but Aspardi<br>\ncontinued to shoot him.<\/p>\n<p>\"However, the witnesses were afraid to testify against the<br>\npolice,\" he said.<\/p>",
