Oetojo opens business law seminar<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman opened a
\nseminar yesterday for presentations on Singapore business law to
\nthe Indonesian legal community.<\/p>\n
The seminar is expected to enhance bilateral legal cooperation
\nin support of expanding economic and trade relations.<\/p>\n
Oetojo said that economic ties should be supported by mutual
\nunderstanding of each country's legal system and law
\ninstitutions.<\/p>\n
He said the differences in the Singaporean and Indonesian
\nlegal systems have decreased as some of Indonesia's business law
\npractices are influenced by the Anglo-Saxon common law system.<\/p>\n
Sunaryati Hartono, the chairman of the National Agency for Law
\nDevelopment, underlined the minister's statement, saying that the
\nbold lines which once divided the Common law system, applied in
\nAnglo-Saxon countries, and the Statute law system, applied in
\nEurope Continental countries, have faded.<\/p>\n
She said the extensive use of international agreements as law
\namong many parties demonstrated the increasing harmony between
\nthe two legal systems.<\/p>\n
Singapore Minister of Foreign Affairs and Law S. Jayakumar,
\nwho delivered the keynote speech during the opening ceremony,
\nhoped that the cooperation will be followed up with exchanges of
\nvisits by legal professionals and scholars from both countries.<\/p>\n
Masters program<\/p>\n
Jayakumar said the National University of Singapore will soon
\nlaunch a new masters program called Master of Comparative Law,
\nwhich is tailored specially for students from neighboring
\ncountries, such as Indonesia.<\/p>\n
\"The faculty also intends to start courses in Indonesian law,
\nparticularly on Indonesia's business and investment laws,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
He said the university will establish a Center for Advanced
\nLegal Studies, which is expected to become a reputable center for
\nthe study of regional laws.<\/p>\n
\"This center is expected to be operational very soon. In line
\nwith all these developments, I understand the university will
\nencourage suitably qualified candidates from Indonesia for
\nscholarships to do research in Indonesian law at the faculty,\"
\nJayakumar said.<\/p>\n
The Indonesian ambassador to Singapore, Soedibyo Rahardjo,
\nsaid that the cooperation in law is expected to boost Singapore's
\ninvestment in Indonesia because Singapore investors will be more
\ncertain that their investments will be secure under Indonesian
\nbusiness law.<\/p>\n
\"Singapore's total investments in Indonesia have reached
\nUS$1.4 billion,\" he said.<\/p>\n
The meeting follows the first seminar in 1984, at which
\nIndonesian lawyers made presentations on Indonesian business laws
\nto the Singapore legal community.<\/p>\n
The current two-day seminar will discuss seven topics: an
\noverview of Singapore's legal system, the legal profession in
\nSingapore, Singapore law on secured transactions, the law on
\nstandard-term contracts in Singapore, the legal structure and
\nregulation of the Singapore stock exchange, the land law and
\nstrata titles in Singapore and international commercial
