Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia \u2014 Former US President Barack Obama launched a\npolitical attack on Donald Trump ahead of the mid-term elections on 3\nNovember 2026. Obama accused the US-Israeli war against Iran of being a\ndisastrous decision that had worsened America\u2019s security while pushing\nup energy prices and the cost of living.<\/p>\n
Obama delivered his criticism at a Democratic Party campaign event in\nMorrow, Georgia, on Wednesday. He appeared to support Senator Jon\nOssoff, who is fighting to retain his seat against Republican candidate\nMike Collins, and Keisha Lance Bottoms, who is contesting the Georgia\ngubernatorial election against Rick Jackson. The results will help\ndetermine which party controls the US Congress for the following two\nyears.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe current president has made a series of bad decisions, the most\ncatastrophic of which was starting an unnecessary war, a war that nobody\nasked for or chose,\u201d Obama said, according to Al Jazeera on Thursday (29\nOctober 2026).<\/p>\n
He said the conflict with Iran contradicted promises made by the\nTrump administration and warned that the war was not truly over, despite\nprevious efforts to secure a ceasefire and hold negotiations.<\/p>\n
Obama also highlighted the conflict\u2019s consequences for US security\nand the economy. He said reports indicated that America\u2019s weapons\nstockpiles, particularly Patriot interceptor missiles, were running low,\nwhile Iran\u2019s closure of the Strait of Hormuz had disrupted a strategic\nroute carrying around one-fifth of the world\u2019s oil and liquefied natural\ngas supplies.<\/p>\n
Obama said the situation helped explain the rise in oil and diesel\nprices, which was putting pressure on the public.<\/p>\n
\u201cOur missile stocks have been depleted, leaving us more vulnerable.\nNow Iran is in control of the Strait of Hormuz,\u201d Obama told supporters.\nHe added that soaring energy prices were pushing up the cost of various\ngoods, leaving the public to bear the consequences of the government\u2019s\ndecisions.<\/p>\n
As well as the war, Obama attacked Trump\u2019s trade tariffs, which he\nsaid were placing a burden on consumers.<\/p>\n
\u201cEconomists had already warned that when tariffs are imposed,\nconsumers are the ones who bear the cost. And that is exactly what has\nhappened,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Obama also criticised Trump\u2019s trade relationship with Canada and his\nadministration\u2019s approach to US allies.<\/p>\n
He took aim at Trump for, in his view, focusing more on beautifying\nthe White House than resolving the country\u2019s problems. Obama mocked the\ngold decorations in the Oval Office, saying Trump seemed to be doing\narts and crafts in the midst of war and rising prices. The jibe followed\nan earlier joke in which Obama compared the White House renovation to a\nSaddam Hussein-style Cheesecake Factory.<\/p>\n
Concluding his speech, Obama broadened his criticism beyond the\neconomy and the war to the values of government. He warned that lies,\ncheating and intimidation by the country\u2019s highest officials could\ndamage public life.<\/p>\n
