Nynex to expand telecom business in Indonesia<\/p>\n
HONG KONG (JP): Nynex Network Systems Company, a divestiture
\nof the Bell system based in New York, plans to expand its
\nbusiness in Indonesia as part of its global market strategy to
\nstrengthen its operations in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n
The president and group executive of Nynex Worldwide Services,
\nRichard Blackburn, said here on Tuesday said that the company's
\ntarget is to capture a 10 percent share of the worldwide
\ntelecommunications market and \"become the number one provider of
\ncommunication infrastructure in the Asia-Pacific\".<\/p>\n
The region is currently dominated by NTT, AT&T and DBP
\nTelecommunications in telecommunications operations and Alcatel,
\nSiemens, NEC and AT&T in equipment vending.<\/p>\n
Daniel Petri, vice president of Nynex Worldwide Services, said
\nthat in Indonesia, Nynex plans to develop fiber-optic cables in
\naddition to its network infrastructure programs, which are
\nalready underway.<\/p>\n
Plans for a Fiber-optic Link Around the Globe (FLAG) cable
\npassing through Indonesia have already been drawn up, but are
\npresently suspended until agreements are reached with its
\nIndonesian partners, PT Satelindo and PT Indosat.<\/p>\n
\"We were in the process of discussing the project ... but we
\nhave deferred to a later date,\" Petri told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Nynex has already completed the first stage of talks with the
\ntwo companies, but uncertainty arose on the question of the most
\nsuitable landing point for the project.<\/p>\n
Petri explained that the FLAG system, of which Nynex is the
\nmanaging sponsor, would be the world's longest undersea fiber-
\noptic cable, following the 27,000 kilometer sea route between
\nBritain and Japan via the Mediterranean and Indian Ocean regions,
\nat the time of its completion next year.<\/p>\n
The cable currently has landing points in Britain, Spain,
\nItaly, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, India, Thailand,
\nMalaysia, Hong Kong, China, South Korea and Japan.<\/p>\n
Prospect<\/p>\n
Michael Heath, a senior vice president and managing director
\nfor business development, who is based in the company's Hong Kong
\noffice, said that Nynex also plans to continue expanding network
\nconstruction projects in Indonesia, joining hands with partners
\nsuch as Rajawali Group, PT Wahana Esa, Bimantara Group's PT
\nElektrindo Nusantara and Pertamina's PT Elnusa.<\/p>\n
\"The prospect in Indonesia is promising, although it may take
\nsome time to sort out,\" Heath said.<\/p>\n
Nynex is currently preparing network construction projects in
\nIndonesia to build 70,000 lines under a revenue-sharing scheme
\nwith local partners.<\/p>\n
Nynex was selected two years ago in a bid by state-owned PT
\nTelkom ago to build 100,000 lines under the Telecom III Package I
\nproject.<\/p>\n
The project, which is now completed, was a major expansion
\nfunded by the World Bank.<\/p>\n
Nynex is a partner in Indotel, one of the 12 consortia
\nselected last year in a pre-qualification round for developing
\ntwo million lines across the country. Winners of the $10 billion
\nproject have yet to be announced.<\/p>\n
Robert Anderson, a vice president for business development,
\nexplained that because Nynex provides services -- which include
\ndesigning, building, integrating and operating communications
\nsystems -- it does not produce equipment.<\/p>\n
\"We are not tied to a certain product or manufacturer. Thus,
\nwe can choose which products will best meet the requirements of
\nan operation,\" he said.<\/p>\n
With total assets of $30.1 billion, Nynex gained operating
\nrevenues of $13 billion last year, with a net income of $793
\nmillion.<\/p>\n
Its activities are conducted in Thailand, China, Indonesia,
\nthe Philippines, Japan, Gibraltar, Greece, Poland, the Czech
