In linguistic terms, Nuzulul Qur\u2019an means the revelation of the\nQur\u2019an. In Indonesia, Nuzulul Qur\u2019an is commemorated by Muslims and is a\nmajor religious day organised by the government. To the author\u2019s\nknowledge, such commemorations are unique to Indonesia. This underscores\nthe government\u2019s strong commitment and support for religious\ncommunities, including Muslims.<\/p>\n
From historical and theological perspectives, there are four stages\nin the Qur\u2019anic revelation:<\/p>\n
First, the Qur\u2019an descended from the Sidrat al-Muntaha to the\nheavens, arriving with its complete arrangement. Some exegesists refer\nto this event as Lailatul Qadr.<\/p>\n
Second, the Qur\u2019an descended from the heavens to the Prophet Muhammad\nvia the Angel Gabriel. It was revealed gradually over more than 22 years\n(610\u2013623 CE). The first verses were Surah Al-\u2019Alaq (96:1\u20135), revealed on\n17 Ramadan while the Prophet Muhammad dwelt in the Cave of Hira. The\nfinal verses revealed were Surah Al-Ma\u2019idah (5:3) during the Prophet\u2019s\nFarewell Pilgrimage. This first revelation also marked Muhammad\u2019s\nappointment as Rasulullah (Messenger of God).<\/p>\n
Third, the process whereby the Prophet conveyed the revelations to\nthe companions and commanded them to write them down on various media.\nThe companions wrote on media such as palm fronds, bones, and other\nmaterials. Those who heard from the Prophet taught others. This process\nbecame the beginning of the tradition of reading and writing, the\ntradition of learning and the early education in the Islamic world.<\/p>\n
Fourth, the process of Muslims performing tilawat al-Qur\u2019an.\nAccording to Abdullah Yusuf Ali (1872\u20131953) in The Meaning of The Holy\nQur\u2019an (1995), tilawat al-Qur\u2019an comprises four components: reading,\nunderstanding, applying personally, and propagating, embodying, and\nproving the truth of the Qur\u2019an in life.<\/p>\n
Historically and theologically, the first three processes are\ncomplete. The fourth process remains to be carried out. This process\nnever ends.<\/p>\n
Ramadan is the month of Nuzul al-Qur\u2019an and tilawat al-Qur\u2019an, a\nmonth of education as we learn and teach the Qur\u2019an. The Prophet\nMuhammad said: \u201cThe best among you are those who learn and teach the\nQur\u2019an\u201d (hadith reported by Bukhari from Uthman bin Affan).<\/p>\n
