Nurdin faces new charges<\/p>\n
UJUNGPANDANG, South Sulawesi: Victory celebrations over a
\ndropped corruption case on Monday proved short lived for Golkar
\nlegislator and businessman Nurdin Halid, as he faces new criminal
\ncharges.<\/p>\n
Local police chief Col. Jusuf Manggaberani said on Wednesday
\nNurdin had been accused of stealing a banner belonging to
\nIndonesian Muslim University (UMI) students. \"We are set to
\ninvestigate the case, pending the President's permission,\" Jusuf
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
The district court here acquitted Nurdin, at the request of
\nprosecutors, who claimed there was not enough evidence to prove
\nhe embezzled Rp 115.77 billion (US$12 million) of farmers'
\ncompulsory savings from a local cooperative.<\/p>\n
The students filed a lawsuit against Nurdin, who they accused
\nof ordering his men to take the 30-meter-long banner away from
\nUMI campus. The banner, inscribed with criticism aimed at the
\nbusinessman, was given to police as evidence for defamation
\ncharges leveled by Nurdin on the students.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, students continued to demonstrate on Wednesday to
\nprotest Nurdin's release. Police and military troops were posted
\nat buildings and businesses belonging to Nurdin because of fears
\nthat the students would damage the properties.<\/p>\n
An official of a taxi company controlled by Nurdin said the
\nwave of rallies against the businessman's release had cost the
\nfirm Rp 400 million because most of its 560 taxis were not
