Nurcholish in critical condition again<\/p>\n

Respected Muslim scholar Nurcholish Madjid lapsed into critical
\ncondition again on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur, as the 66-year-old intellectual is familiarly known,
\nwas taken back to the Pondok Indah Hospital in South Jakarta on
\nWednesday night with complications.<\/p>\n
He was initially treated in the hospital's Intensive Care Unit
\nbefore being moved to a regular ward.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur had undergone a series of operations for his liver
\nproblems in Indonesia, China and Singapore before being sent back
\nhome.<\/p>\n
One of his close aides said that as of Thursday afternoon, Cak
\nNur was still in critical condition and under intensive
\nmonitoring due to \"serious complications\".<\/p>\n
\"He remains conscious, though, and he can still recognize
\npeople. He has an excellent memory,\" the aide, who declined to be
\nnamed, told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
A number of famous figures have visited the ailing scholar,
\nwho is widely hailed as one of the greatest Indonesian Muslim
\nthinkers.<\/p>\n
Among those visiting him on Thursday were People's
\nConsultative Assembly Speaker Hidayat Nur Wahid, presidential
\nspokesperson Andi Malarangeng, economist Faisal Basri and
\nMinister of Manpower and Transmigration Fahmi Idris.<\/p>\n
Andi said that Cak Nur recognized him and spoke his name
\nfaintly.<\/p>\n
\"I don't know for sure what's wrong with him, but he's very
\nweak,\" said Andi as quoted by news portal detikcom.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur first fell ill in July last year, when doctors
\ndiagnosed him as having cirrhosis of the liver.<\/p>\n
He then underwent a liver transplant operation in Taiping
\nHospital in Guangdong, China, before being transferred to
\nSingapore's National University Hospital (NUH) to receive further
\ntreatment for an infection.<\/p>\n
In March 2005, Cak Nur, the current rector of Paramadina
\nUniversity, was flown home to Indonesia and hospitalized again in
\nPondok Indah. Not long afterwards, he was discharged after his
\nhealth showed signs of improving.<\/p>\n
Cak Nur's relapse, however, will be worrying to many people,
\nmoderate Muslims in particular, who have long recognized his
\noutstanding contribution to the way people understand Islam.<\/p>\n
Many people are fervently praying that the prominent Muslim
\nscholar will recover and continue to put forward practical ideas
\nfor promoting Muslim moderation, tolerance and good governance in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
Many have hailed the role played by Cak Nur, who is also a
\nprofessor at the Syarif Hidayatullah State Islamic University
\n(UIN), in helping curb the proliferation of Muslim fundamentalist
\nand hard-line groups.<\/p>",
