Nur Mahmudi reveals priorities for his five-year term<\/p>\n

Dozens of supporters of Depok mayoral candidate Badrul Kamal
\ngathered on Sunday to protest a Supreme Court decision declaring
\nNur Mahmudi Ismail of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) the
\nwinner of the June 26 election.<\/p>\n
Wearing shirts and jackets from Golkar, the political party
\nthat nominated Badrul, the protesters gathered in front of the
\nDepok municipality office on Jl. Margonda at noon. Several
\nprotesters delivered speeches and led the crowd in songs.<\/p>\n
The deputy head of the Depok council, Usman Balau, also of
\nGolkar, said the protest was just the first in a series of
\ndemonstrations planned against the court verdict.<\/p>\n
\"Tomorrow (Monday), we plan to mobilize more people in Depok,
\nat the Supreme Court and the Ministry of Home Affairs,\" Usman was
\nquoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
The Supreme Court overturned on Friday a decision by the West
\nJava High Court declaring Badrul and running mate Syihabuddin
\nAhmad winners of the Depok mayoral election.<\/p>\n
The Depok General Elections Commission (KPUD) originally
\ndeclared Nur Mahmudi Ismail and running mate Yuyun Wirasaputra
\nthe winners of the election, but that decision was overturned by
\nthe West Java High Court.<\/p>\n
However, the final say in the dispute belongs to the Supreme
\nCourt, whose decisions are final and binding.<\/p>\n
The day after the Supreme Court decision, Nur Mahmudi spelled
\nout his three main priorities during his five-year term.<\/p>\n
He said his priorities were improving the quality of public
\nservices, building more infrastructure and improving law and
\norder.<\/p>\n
He also called on all residents of Depok, including Badrul
\nKamal and his supporters, to work together to ensure the success
\nof development programs in the city.<\/p>\n
\"We hope all elements of Depok society -- the legislative,
\nexecutive and judicial branches, as well as the people -- will
\njoin hands to develop the municipality,\" said Nur Mahmudi on
\nSaturday.<\/p>\n
Nur Mahmudi said that public service would become his priority
\nbecause the main task of the regional administration was to serve
\nits residents.<\/p>\n
He stressed that improving public services would take time,
\nand that any improvements depended on the work of civil servants.<\/p>\n
He promised to improve the professionalism of Depok's civil
\nservants by organizing training seminars and workshops, as well
\nas introducing raises and improving their benefits.<\/p>\n
Nur Mahmudi said he would focus on building infrastructure to
\novercome the problems of flooding and traffic, which are major
\nproblems in Depok.<\/p>\n
He said security and public order were important to allow the
\nmunicipality to attract investors and push economic growth.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Center for Electoral Reform (Cetro) welcomed on
\nSaturday the court's decision, saying it was a good precedent for
\nthe Supreme Court to overturn a high court decision widely seen
\nas violating the public's sense of justice.<\/p>\n
\"The decision is not only good for democracy in Depok, but it
\nwill also be a good precedent for disputes in other regional
\nelections,\" said Cetro executive director Hadar N. Gumay.<\/p>",
