Numerous fire victims see doctors for stress<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Dozens of residents in the Tanah Abang district,
\nCentral Jakarta, whose houses were ravaged by a fire Monday
\nflocked to doctors yesterday for stress.<\/p>\n
Astri Handayani from the Central Jakarta Health Office said
\ndozens of residents have visited a health clinic set up in front
\nof the Baitul Muslimin mosque on Jl. Karet Pasar Baru, in the
\nKaret Tengsin subdistrict.<\/p>\n
\"Most of them suffer from stress. They have been complaining
\nof headaches since the fire,\" Astri said.<\/p>\n
She said other residents came to the 24-hour clinic for hand
\nand leg wounds after salvaging their belongings.<\/p>\n
Monday night's downpour worsened their condition.<\/p>\n
\"Some residents (including children) caught cold and have
\ncoughs today,\" she said.<\/p>\n
More than 1,500 people became homeless when a fire destroyed
\n300 slum homes in seven neighborhoods of RW 05 of the district.<\/p>\n
The fire was believed to have been caused by an explosion of a
\nkerosene stove owned by a ketupat sayur food vendor.<\/p>\n
But, Hasan Baharudin, head of a neighborhood unit, said that
\none of their neighbors, Jupri, had said the fire was not caused
\nby a stove explosion but by a short circuit in his house.<\/p>\n
Hasan and Jupri then reported the believed cause of the fire
\nto the Tanah Abang police subprecinct yesterday.<\/p>\n
Tanah Abang police officer Lt. Ali Masduki confirmed the short
\ncircuit as the real cause of the fire.<\/p>\n
The slum district was still wet and slippery yesterday when
\nresidents tried to fish out remaining valuables.<\/p>\n
Scavengers had gathered on the site.<\/p>\n
The residents sold remaining goods made from steel to
\nscavengers for an average price of Rp 200 (8.3 US cents) per
\nkilogram.<\/p>\n
Jazrul, a security officer from the United Development Party
\n(PPP), said he and his friends set up a security post and a
\ncommunal kitchen for the fire victims.<\/p>\n
\"We received donations from PPP's Tanah Abang branch and some
\nindividuals,\" he said.<\/p>\n
PPP's South Jakarta and Central Jakarta chapters donated food
\nand kerosene lamps to the fire victims yesterday, the party's
\ncentral board said in a press release.<\/p>\n
The residents slept at a local military office, the Baitul
\nMuslimin mosque and in three big tents set up by the city's
\nIndonesian Red Cross (PMI) on a soccer field behind the Karet
\nTengsin cemetery.<\/p>\n
Lots of nasi bungkus, which was cooked at another communal
\nkitchen set up by PMI on the soccer field, was distributed to
\nfire victims.<\/p>\n
The wife of the Karet Tengsin subdistrict head, Tuti Syaiful
\nBahri, asked people to donate money, food and clothes.<\/p>\n
\"We hope people could donate clothes, especially school
\nuniforms because several victims were students,\" she said.<\/p>\n
The residents began to rebuild their homes yesterday, some of
\nwhich bought wooden planks for their homes.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Governor Surjadi Soedirdja said the victims were
\nallowed to rebuild their homes for a temporary period.<\/p>\n
\"In the long term, the city will build low-cost apartments for
\nresidents, not apartments for middle or upper-income people. But
\nwe don't have the funds for that yet,\" Surjadi said.<\/p>\n
\"Stop saying that the land will be bought by developers,\"
\nSurjadi said, referring to rumors among residents that a private
\ndeveloper had recently offered to buy their land for Rp 600,000
\nper square meter.<\/p>\n
He said most victims' homes were built on city-owned land. \"A
\nfew have land certificates,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Neighborhood chief Hasan said his residents insisted on
\nrebuilding their houses, even though the subdistrict village head
\nhad asked them to seek a safer place within four days after the
\nfire.<\/p>\n
\"We are not ready to move because most of us don't have
\nrelatives outside the scorched area,\" said Hasan's daughter,
\nwhose relatives in the neighborhood were also victims of Monday's
