Number of city's crime black spots doubles<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The number of crime black spots in the capital
\ndoubled from 31 in July to 60 last month as the result of a
\ngrowing sense of desperation setting in among the segment of the
\ncity's population recently forced into life below the poverty
\nline, an official has said.<\/p>\n
Tongam Tambunan, a senior executive of the city's public order
\noffice, said on Wednesday that areas vulnerable to street
\nrobberies and extortion would continue to increase for as long as
\npoverty continued to advance through the city in leaps and
\nbounds.<\/p>\n
He said that forthcoming data on poverty in the capital in
\nNovember would show a substantial jump in the number of poor
\nfamilies from the October figure of 57,218 families or 228,900
\nindividuals.<\/p>\n
\"This will force more desperate people onto the streets and
\ninto a life of crime. Many of the city's junctions and toll roads
\nhave already become popular haunts for robbers, extortionists and
\nbeggars-turned-extortionists,\" Tambunan said.<\/p>\n
According to preliminary data from his office, new crime black
\nspots in the capital include parts of the Cengkareng-Soekarno
\nHatta International Airport toll road, the Tanjung Priok-Jembatan
\nTiga-Pluit toll road, the Pondok Pinang-Jagorawi toll road and
\ncertain parts of Lenteng Agung in South Jakarta and Galur in
\nCentral Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"Other black spots in Central Jakarta include street junctions
\non Jl. K.S. Tubun in Tanah Abang, parts of Harmoni, Kota and
\nGambir railway stations, Lapangan Banteng, Sarinah department
\nstore, Matraman, Taman Suropati, Gunung Sahari and Senen,\"
\nTambunan said.<\/p>\n
In West Jakarta, crime black spots include street junctions in
\nTomang, Grogol, Slipi, and Jl. Daan Mogot and Jl. Kyai Tapa. In
\nEast Jakarta, a significant rise in crime has been recorded at
\njunctions in Cililitan, in areas around Taman Mini Indonesia,
\nalong Jl. Pemuda and in Klender.<\/p>\n
Several streets in the Ancol and Pluit area of North Jakarta
\nhave also been classified as black spots.<\/p>\n
In South Jakarta, several street junctions in Kuningan, Pondok
\nLabu, Pancoran, the Blok M shopping area and Jl. Sisingamangaraja
\nhave also been listed as the favored haunts of street criminals,
\nespecially during the hours of darkness.<\/p>\n
Tambunan said that governor Sutiyoso had ordered the city's
\nfive mayors and other officials to take stern action to stamp out
\nstreet robberies and extortion in the capital.<\/p>\n
The governor has also asked Jakarta Police chief Maj. Gen.
\nNoegroho Djajoesman to enlist the security forces into the effort
\nto combat crime.<\/p>\n
When contacted on a separate occasion on Wednesday, Sutiyoso
\nconfirmed he had issued instructions to his staff and requested
\nthe help of the police.<\/p>\n
He also said he had been discussing ways to stamp out the
\nrising incidence of crime on toll roads fringing the city with
\nexecutives from the state toll road operator PT Jasa Marga.<\/p>\n
\"We need their help. They must report any robberies that take
\nplace on the toll roads immediately and they must take immediate
\naction to help the victims and ensure others are adequately
\nwarned,\" Sutiyoso said. (ylt)<\/p>",
