NUFFIC -- road to academic excellence<\/p>\n
After half a century of independence, Indonesia's urge to
\ndevelop is stronger than ever. Education of the new generation is
\nseen as the basis for the future as indeed it is.<\/p>\n
To build this basis as broad as possible -- and in view of the
\nera of globalization -- education should be internationalized,
\ncertainly at the postgraduate level. This was realized by the
\nscientific community in Europe. Many universities and
\npolytechnics of the European continent are now presenting their
\npostgraduate studies partly in English in order to have a joint
\nlanguage and to share their knowledge with foreigners.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands -- never one to pass up an opportunity -- has
\ndesigned a whole international education system within their
\nregular system. In this international education system, English
\nis the sole conducting language. Special institutions have been
\nset up in the Netherlands where foreign students are invited to
\nfollow short intensive courses, to study for their Master's
\ndegree or even to obtain a PhD.<\/p>\n
The success of these international education institutes has
\nbeen enormous. In the space of a short time, Dutch universities
\nhave added numerous studies in English to their regular programs.
\nPolytechnic schools have followed suit. Polytechnic schools or
\nhigh vocational schools in the Netherlands are academically
\nalmost the same level as universities, but they are focused on
\nthe practical side instead of on the research side of science.
\nBoth universities and high vocational institutions are now
\ncollaborating with counterpart institutions in other countries as
\npart of their regular activities -- in both teaching and
\nresearch.<\/p>\n
In all, the Netherlands now offers almost 300 study programs
\nin English, most of them at the postgraduate level. The fields of
\nstudy include science and technology, agriculture, economics,
\nbusiness and management, law, health care, aerospace-survey and
\nearth science, European studies, tourism and many more.<\/p>\n
An interesting point is that these courses are designed to
\nconnect with the educational system of other countries, including
\nIndonesia. A student who wants to follow the regular courses in
\nEnglish-speaking countries often has to lengthen his or her study
\nperiod in order to catch up with the educational level over
\nthere. Not so in the Netherlands. The international education in
\nthe Netherlands is designed to make that connection right away. A
\nstudent with an S1 degree here may enroll directly into a
\nMaster's program in the Netherlands and will return to Indonesia
\nafter approximately 18 months of study with a Master in his field
\nof study.<\/p>\n
Those who enroll, will be guaranteed with a Master's degree of
\na very solid quality. The educational level in the Netherlands is
\nwell known for its academic excellence.<\/p>\n
There are several Dutch universities which are famous
\nworldwide. Take for example the university of Delft with its
\nspecialty in technology, or the university of Leiden with its law
\nprograms and the university of Wageningen with Agriculture and
\nForestry.<\/p>\n
These three universities have already strong relationships
\nwith Indonesian universities. Moreover there is a distinct
\ninterest from other Dutch educational institutions as well which
\nwould like to set up international linkages with Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The Netherlands organization for international cooperation in
\nhigher education (NUFFIC) was founded in 1952 by a group of Dutch
\nuniversities. NUFFIC aims to stimulate, support and improve the
\ninternational exchange of people and ideas.<\/p>\n
NUFFIC's branch office in Jakarta is already providing
\nservices such as planning and placing students, student
\nmonitoring, administration and payment, technical assistance and
\nvisiting Dutch scholars to develop research plans, to the
\nIndonesian government through projects for the Ministry of
\nEducation and Culture and BPPT.<\/p>\n
With its more than 40 years of experience, NUFFIC is in a
\nposition to build a bridge between the academic worlds in the
\nNetherlands and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
