NU leader seeks more info on 'Green Dragon'<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Central Java Chapter of the Nahdlatul Ulama
\n(NU) sought yesterday further explanation from chairman
\nAbdurrahman Wahid about his assertion there was an on-going
\noperation, code-named "Green Dragon", to discredit him and the
\nMoslem grouping.<\/p>\n
"I've written to Gus Dur (Abdurrahman) because I'm not
\nfamiliar with the term. But I consider his statement a warning
\nfor all NU members to be on the alert," chapter chairman Achmad
\nwas quoted by Antara as saying in Semarang.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman went public with the allegations Sunday, calling
\non all NU members to be vigilant for any attempt at provocation
\nby outsiders intent on creating instability and making NU the
\nscapegoat for recent and future unrest.<\/p>\n
His allegations came in the wake of the riots in Situbondo
\n(East Java) in October and in Tasikmalaya (West Java) last month,
\nboth predominantly NU-towns.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman used the phrase "Green Dragon" to distinguish it
\nfrom "Red Dragon", which he said was a covert operation to topple
\nMegawati Soekarnoputri from leadership of the Indonesian
\nDemocratic Party last year.<\/p>\n
Abdurrahman declined to say who was behind these operations.<\/p>\n
Army Chief of Staff Gen. Hartono, when asked to comment on the
\nallegations about the "Green Dragon" operation, simply
\nacknowledged there had been attempts to sow instability in
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
"Intelligence reports show some people have been coordinating
\na certain mission here to create instability," Hartono told
\nreporters during a breaking of the fast meal at his official
\nresidence in South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Hartono denied suggestions that the recent riots were intended
\nto discredit a certain mass organization or to put the blame on
\nit.<\/p>\n
"I do not see the connection," he said.<\/p>\n
When asked to specifically comment on the alleged motives
\nbehind the "Green Dragon" operation, he said: "to my knowledge,
\nthere are no attempts in that direction".<\/p>\n
Separately, a member of the National Commission on Human
\nRights, praised Abdurrahman yesterday for urging all NU members
\nto be vigilant.<\/p>\n
Muladi, also rector of the Diponegoro University in Semarang,
\nsaid he saw the appeal as a measure that could prevent riots
\ninvolving NU members in other towns in the future.<\/p>\n
"Surely, Gus Dur understands more the nahdliyyin (NU
\nfollowers)'s emotions, and the way he warned of danger has proven
\nvery effective," Muladi was quoted by Antara as saying.<\/p>\n
Muladi called on the Central Java office of the Agency for
\nCoordinating the National Defense and Stability to take
\nAbdurrahman's warning seriously and to look for effective
