The General Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama Executive Board (PBNU),\nKH Yahya Chollor Staquf, has requested that the supporters of KH\nMuhammad Yusuf Chudlori (Gus Yusuf) to remain calm and refrain from\nforcing their way into the plenary session arena of the 35th NU Congress\nat the Bahrul Ulum Islamic Boarding School, Jombang, East Java, on\nSunday (30\/08\/2026).<\/p>\n
In his statement, Gus Yahya emphasised that he would strive to find a\nwise solution regarding the aspirations expressed by Gus Yusuf\u2019s\nsupporters, while still respecting the decisions made by the congress\ndelegates (muktamirin).<\/p>\n
\u201cI wish to convey a message to those currently protesting at the\nplenary session site. I ask that you remain calm. I personally promise\nto endeavour to find a wise way out of this issue so that everyone can\nremain at peace,\u201d said Gus Ser Yahya.<\/p>\n
Gus Yahya stated that Gus Yusuf is one of the finest cadres possessed\nby Nahdlatul Ulama. He noted that, if left to personal preference, he\nwould want all of NU\u2019s best cadres to have the opportunity to serve.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn truth, I acknowledge that he is an excellent cadre. If it\ndepended on me personally, I would want everyone to be accommodated and\neveryone to receive an opportunity. However, the delegates have made\ntheir decision,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Consequently, Gus Yahya urged all candidates for General Chairman not\nto ignore the great potential held by Gus Yusuf, regardless of who is\neventually selected by the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi (AHWA) as the PBNU\nGeneral Chairman for the 2026\u20132031 period.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhoever is later chosen by the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi to be the\nGeneral Chairman for the upcoming period must not forget Gus Yusuf\nChudlori as a great potential that must be utilised for the benefit of\nthis organisation (jam\u2019iyah),\u201d he asserted.<\/p>\n
He even stated that if he were re-entrusted with leading the PBNU, he\nwould provide space and strategic roles to Gus Yusuf in the future PBNU\nadministration.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf I am the one appointed by the Ahlul Halli wal Aqdi, I will\ncertainly consider, calculate, and provide a strategic role for Gus\nYusuf,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
As the Congress nears completion, Gus Yahya also expressed his\ngratitude that the series of the 35th NU Congress has proceeded smoothly\ninto its decisive agendas. He noted that the congress is now left with\nseveral core agendas that will produce important decisions as a\nfoundation for Nahdlatul Ulama entering its second century.<\/p>\n
\u201cAlhamdulillah, it has proceeded smoothly up to this point. We only\nhave a few core agendas left, which will result in decisions that will\nserve as the foundation for Nahdlatul Ulama\u2019s journey through its second\ncentury,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Gus Yahya also expressed his thanks to all regional (PWNU), branch\n(PCNU), and international (PCINU) boards, as well as the delegates, for\ntheir magnanimity and goodwill during his leadership process. He urged\nall congress participants to prioritise the welfare of Nahdlatul Ulama\nabove all other interests when determining the organisation\u2019s direction\nfor the next five years.<\/p>\n
Previously, the atmosphere of the 35th Nahdlatul Ulama Congress in\nJombang, East Java, turned chaotic on Sunday (30\/08\/2026) afternoon.\nBased on observations at the location, dozens of students (santri)\nattempted to force their way into the main area of the fourth plenary\nsession at the Multipurpose Building.<\/p>\n
The unrest occurred after the session leadership ratified a clause\nregarding a \u201cpolitical waiting period\u201d (masa idah politik) during the\nplenary session. Under this provision, anyone wishing to run for the\nGeneral Chairman of the PBNU is required to resign from any political\nparty at least one year prior to their candidacy.<\/p>\n
This regulation was contested by several congress participants, who\nargued it could hinder the candidacy of a potential chairman who had\npreviously served in a political party. Around 1:30 PM, a group of\nindividuals identifying as Gus Yusuf\u2019s supporters attempted to enter the\nmain arena to protest the decision.
