NU chairman plays down rival's exit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Chairman of the Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) Abdurrahman
\nWahid is playing down the resignation of Yusuf Hasyim from the
\norganization's advisory board.<\/p>\n
\"No problem, really. One board member has resigned and the
\nothers remain loyal,\" he told reporters on Thursday.<\/p>\n
Hasyim, Abdurrahman's uncle, this week announced his
\nresignation from the advisory board, less than one month after
\nhis appointment.<\/p>\n
Hasyim said he resigned because the selection of NU executive
\nboard members was not, by the Islamic socio-religious
\norganization's standards, democratic, provoking protests and
\nworsening the internal bickering.<\/p>\n
Another reason for his resignation is Abdurrahman's possible
\nprosecution for accusing his rival in last month's chairmanship
\nrace, Abu Hasan, of accepting a kickback of US$18 million from
\nJakarta's Tanjung Priok port development.<\/p>\n
On Abu's threat to sue him, Abdurrahman said he was ready to
\nface trial, and that several lawyers had offered to defend him
\nfree of charge.<\/p>\n
\"Yes, I have heard that he (Abu) has filed a complaint with
\nthe police but I haven't received any notice on anything from the
\nauthorities,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Abu, who has set up a rival NU executive board, filed the
\ncomplaint with the police headquarters here early this week,
\nsaying that Abdurrahman's accusation amounted to slander. (pan)<\/p>",
