Kupang, NTT - The Animal, Fish, and Plant Quarantine Office of East\nNusa Tenggara (NTT) has detained 1.23 tonnes of shark meat intended for\nshipment from Kupang to Lombok because it was not accompanied by\nquarantine certificates.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have been holding the goods since yesterday because no quarantine\ncertificates could be presented to us. Moving forward, the goods will be\nidentified by the relevant authorities to determine whether this shark\nmeat commodity is protected or has restricted usage,\u201d said Apriana Santi\nSoeroso, Head of the NTT Quarantine Law Enforcement Team, in Kupang on\nWednesday.<\/p>\n
She explained that 1,230 kilograms of shark meat destined for Lombok\nwere secured at Tenau Port, Kupang. The meat, packed in 13 packages, was\nseized because it lacked the necessary quarantine documentation.<\/p>\n
The commodity was planned to be shipped via the KM Dharma Kartika 5.\nHowever, during the loading process on Tuesday (15\/9), officers at Tenau\nSea Port discovered the dozen packages near the ship\u2019s entrance.<\/p>\n
Officers subsequently coordinated with the Indonesian Quarantine\nAgency (Barantin) through the NTT Quarantine Office. The shark meat was\nthen secured for further inspection.<\/p>\n
NTT Quarantine is now coordinating with the Kupang Marine Management\nOffice of the Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries (BPK KKP) and the\nKupang Marine and Fisheries Resources Surveillance Station (PSDKP).<\/p>\n
Identification is required to determine the specific shark species\nand to establish the regulations regarding their use and distribution.\nBPK KKP stated that this process is a vital step in determining the\nsubsequent handling of the commodity.<\/p>\n
The identification process is not intended to complicate shipping\nactivities, but rather to ensure that the use and distribution of shark\nproducts comply with applicable regulations.<\/p>\n
Based on initial information received by NTT Quarantine from BPK KKP,\nthe commodity includes products whose distribution is restricted.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe information we received from BPK KKP indicates that this\ncommodity is subject to distribution restrictions. Therefore, the\ndetained goods will be handed over to the Marine Resources Surveillance\nStation for the identification process in accordance with applicable\nregulations,\u201d said Apiment.<\/p>\n
As such, it cannot yet be confirmed whether the meat originates from\na protected shark species. A final determination is pending the\nidentification process by the authorised agencies.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, the Head of NTT Quarantine, Simon Soli, expressed\nappreciation for the inter-agency coordination in monitoring the\nmovement of marine commodities.<\/p>\n
According to him, collaboration is essential to ensure that trade and\nshipping activities continue without neglecting regulations and efforts\nto preserve marine resources.<\/p>\n
\u201cI urge the public and business actors who intend to transport\nanimal, fish, or plant products to ensure that all requirements are met\nso that their business processes do not encounter obstacles,\u201d said\nSimon.<\/p>\n
