East Nusa Tenggara (NTT) Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena\npersonally brought humanitarian aid to three points affected by the M7.7\nearthquake in Riung District, Ngada Regency, because he wanted to ensure\nthe basic needs of affected communities are met.<\/p>\n
He also wanted to ensure aid distribution runs well and that damage\nassessment is carried out immediately as a basis for further\nhandling.<\/p>\n
\u201cAttention to Riung was briefly interrupted because from the start\nelectricity and signal were also cut off. But we are now in the\nemergency response phase and we will strive in various ways so that\ncommunity needs can be met,\u201d said Governor Emanuel Melkiades Laka Lena,\noften called Melki, in an official statement received in Kupang on\nSunday.<\/p>\n
The NTT Governor is now temporarily based on Flores Island to\ndirectly ensure the condition of the community and that disaster\nhandling in affected areas proceeds as it should.<\/p>\n
He received reports that conditions in Riung require direct attention\nand coordination regarding various obstacles in the early phase of\nearthquake disaster handling.<\/p>\n
To ensure handling, on Saturday (22\/8), Governor Melki directly\ninspected a number of earthquake-affected points while bringing aid in\nthe form of rice and other basic necessities, as well as pillows and\nblankets for people still staying at evacuation sites.<\/p>\n
From Ta\u2019do Village to Bekek and West Lengkosambi, Governor Melki saw\nfirst-hand the condition of residents and held discussions with the\ncommunity and village government regarding needs that still must be\naddressed.<\/p>\n
In Ta\u2019do Village, residents are still being directed to remain in\nevacuation shelters before conditions are declared safe to return\nhome.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile in Bekek, one of the areas that experienced considerable\nimpact, Governor Melki visited the evacuation post established by the\npolice in the yard of St.\u00a0Peter and Paul Church.<\/p>\n
In West Lengkosambi, Governor Melki received reports that some\nresidents chose to evacuate to mountainous areas. Conditions in the area\nwere also exacerbated by the disruption of electricity and communication\nnetworks.<\/p>\n
Responding to this, the Governor stressed that the government will\ncontinue to strive to meet residents\u2019 needs during the emergency\nresponse period.<\/p>\n
The Governor also asked the district government down to village\ngovernments to ensure incoming aid can be distributed properly and\naccurately to affected communities.<\/p>\n
\u201cDistrict to village governments must ensure aid distribution runs\nwell, so that people in need truly receive assistance,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to meeting needs during the emergency response period,\nGovernor Melki requested that the damage assessment process begin\nnow.<\/p>\n
According to him, damage data is still dynamic because seismic\nactivity is still ongoing. However, data collection must still begin so\nthe government has an initial picture of rehabilitation and\nreconstruction needs.<\/p>\n
\u201cFrom now on it must be recorded, even though the data will still be\ndynamic because there are still aftershocks. People\u2019s houses must be\nrecorded, including other public facilities and infrastructure such as\noffices, auxiliary health centres, bridges, and other public\nfacilities,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The Governor also explained that after the emergency response period\nends, handling will enter the repair and recovery phase.<\/p>\n
For people\u2019s homes, the government has prepared an assistance scheme\nbased on the level of damage, namely around Rp15 million for light\ndamage, Rp30 million for moderate damage, and Rp70 million for severe\ndamage.<\/p>\n
\u201cAfter the emergency response period, we will enter the repair phase.\nTherefore, data collection must start now,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
The NTT Provincial Government has from the start continued to\ncoordinate with district and central governments in handling the\ndisaster in Flores.<\/p>\n
According to him, the provincial government\u2019s commitment is to ensure\ncentral government support can be fully channelled to affected regions\nand communities.<\/p>\n
