Mataram (ANTARA) - The Nusa Tenggara Barat (NTB) Provincial General\nHospital (RSUD) has successfully performed a complex neurosurgical\noperation, adding to the growing list of regions in Indonesia capable of\nhandling such advanced medical procedures.<\/p>\n
Dr Obrin Parulability, Director of Clinical Services at the\nDirectorate General of Advanced Health of the Ministry of Health, stated\nthat the procedure was a Superficial Temporal Artery to Middle Cerebral\nArtery (STA-MCA) bypass. This is a microsurgical procedure designed to\nconnect blood vessels outside the skull with blood vessels inside the\nbrain to improve blood flow.<\/p>\n
\u201cOut of 38 provinces, only 11 provinces currently provide this\nSTA-MCA bypass service. If this continues and the hospital becomes\nself-sufficient, it will be on par with lead referral hospitals,\u201d he\nsaid in a statement received in Mataram on Sunday.<\/p>\n
He noted that the Ministry of Health is encouraging the equitable\ndistribution of priority healthcare services. Every province is expected\nto have a government hospital capable of providing such specialised\ncare.<\/p>\n
He added that Ministry of Health support is also directed towards the\nreadiness of facilities and equipment, including the need for\nmicroscopes and microsurgical devices, while competency enhancement\ncontinues through a network of lead referral hospitals.<\/p>\n
The NTB Regional Secretary, Abul Chair, stated that the STA-MCA\nbypass service is part of an effort to ensure that medical technology\nadvances alongside human resource capabilities.<\/p>\n
A series of Brain Bypass Proctorships took place on 11-12 September\n2024, involving the NTB Provincial Hospital team alongside lead\nhospitals, including RS PON Prof.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0Mahar Mardjono Jakarta and RS\nProf.\u00a0Dr.\u00a0I.G.N.G. Ngoerah Bali.<\/p>\n
The mentorship covered not only the execution of the procedure but\nalso preparation, clinical decision-making, and post-operative\nmonitoring.<\/p>\n
The newly developed capability was tested through the treatment of\ntwo patients. The first patient was a 12-year-old child who had\nexperienced symptoms since approximately one year of age, including\nweakness on one side of the body as well as speech and cognitive\nimpairments.<\/p>\n
Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA) examinations revealed narrowing\nof the brain\u2019s blood vessels, and the patient was diagnosed with\nMoyamoya disease. The bypass procedure was performed to help create new\nblood flow pathways to the brain and reduce the risk of insufficient\nblood supply and recurrent strokes.<\/p>\n
The second patient, aged 42, had a history of ischaemic stroke with\nspeech impairment and limb weakness.
